The S.S. Trump is Going Down—Can Juan Be Saved?

A year ago, Congressional Republicans, including Southern Arizona’s very own Juan Ciscomani, booked passage on the S.S. Trump, a luxury liner (with, reportedly, gold toilets), headed for a victory cruise on the placid waters of MAGA-dominated public opinion.

Something, however, has gone very wrong on those high seas. People’s views of the GOP’s president, after whom the big, beautiful, boat was named, have turned stormy. The S.S. Trump, which had been touted as unsinkable, is now taking on water and is about to go down. Many of the president’s Congressional sycophants saw the disaster looming and are pushing each other out of the way to find a place in the lifeboats.  The rest, like Juan, still remain, battered by these tsunami-sized waves:

  • a New York Times poll on January 22 found that “Less than a third of voters think the country is better off than it was when President Trump returned to the White House a year ago, with a wide majority saying he has focused on the wrong issues.” [www.nytimes.com/2026/01/22/us/politics/trump-poll-second-term.html]
  • a CNN poll six days earlier concluded that “Public opinion on nearly every aspect of President Donald Trump’s first year back in the White House is negative…with a majority of Americans saying Trump is focused on the wrong priorities and doing too little to address cost of living.” [www.cnn.com/2026/01/16/politics/trump-economy-first-year-cnn-poll]
  • Pollster G. Elliot Morris published a chart on the 23rd demonstrating just how badly Trump’s policies are being received:
  • Juan Ciscomani may think that he will float his way to victory despite all this, clinging onto some flotsam once the ship goes down. But here’s Morris on the latest poll on which party voters prefer in charge of Congress: “This week, a new Fox News poll showed Democrats hitting the highest percent support on the generic ballot in the history of the survey, winning 52% of the vote vs 46% for the Republicans. This puts them firmly in “wave” territory for November.” [https://www.gelliottmorris.com/p/democrats-hit-historic-high-in-fox]
  • And, here’s a Morris map of the state detailing Trump’s approval ratings by county. The counties colored brown are those with negative views of him.  Arizona Sixth District, Ciscomani’s, down in the lower right, looks as brown as the desert.

Hey Juan, do you know how to swim?
