Tucson K-6 Physical Fitness Day Thursday, November 8

by David Safier

According to Steve Gall, who continues to work tirelessly to promote the need for physical activity for K-6 students in Tucson-area schools:

Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and recess activist Steve Gall are planning a Tucson K-6 Physical Fitness Day Thursday, November 8, where all the K-6 students in the area will do an organized physical activity for 30 minutes. A press  conference is also planned to make awareness of child obesity and how the  schools can contribute to fighting this problem. TUSD, Sunnyside, Vail, Catalina Foothills and Sahuarita Districts have already signed up to participate. That's over 20,000 kids!

In other education news, TUSD elementary school AIMS scores went up  significantly when the recess/PE mandate of at least 60 minutes per week, 3 times per week of organized physical activity was complied with. Some of these schools improved a whole letter grade.
