Update on “Ed crime of the century” investigation

by David Safier

I was told Ed Supe Tom Horne had 3 of his auditors at the Pima County School Superintendent's Office a few weeks ago, rifling through transportation records to try and get the goods on children who may be coming in from Mexico and riding the Lukeville bus into Ajo to go to school. I estimated they spent something like 75-100 employee hours that week. I guess there's plenty of staff and money at the DOE, enough to spare 3 people for 3-4 days, including meals and lodging.

Now I hear Horne has something like 10 employees on the case. A complete report is due out in April or May. That should be a perfect time for Attorney General candidate Horne to burnish his conservative credentials by showing he's tough on Mexican children who are stealing education from Arizona.

From what I've read at Sonoran Alliance, Horne has his work cut out for himself establishing his conservative cred. The vocal and angry right wing is about as fond of Horne as it is of McCain, and it doesn't like McCain at all. The only thing Horne has in the way of conservative credentials is his regular Latino bashing. So I guess he's planning to play this Crime of the Century scenario for all it's worth.
