Weiner has got to go

by David Safier

Yesterday I called Anthony Weiner stupid but said he shouldn't resign, based on what I knew then. Today it looks like he was stupid on steroids. The silly/naughty pics he sent to women are one thing, but the lengths he went to cover his online relationships up shows a lack of basic common sense, and very possibly a violation of congressional rules and ethics.

I always liked the guy. I agree with him on most issues. But he's compromised himself to the point where no one can or should defend him or apologize for him.

Anthony, it's time for you to bow out and let other Democrats distance themselves from your actions and move on.

  1. Good call, Cheri, thanks. I didn’t catch the weird, choppy style that should have tipped me off. This was just some company trying to stick a link on BfA. I deleted the post. You can return to your regularly scheduled (or I should say, unscheduled) commenting.

  2. What’s the deal with this? Was that a cut and paste job,are you agreeing with me, or mocking me? What the heck is this BFA?

  3. If that turns out to be the case, shame on him and he gets what he gets.I’ll reserve my judgement until AFTER the Ethics Committee hearing. The other thing that you have to look at, is that Andrew Brietbart has an agenda. That man LIES FOR A LIVING!Now I see Mr. Brietbart threatening Mr. Weiner over supposed “other” pictures he is in possession of.If Weiner does anything to Brietbart, he’s going to release the other pictures because”that’s what the left would do” Are you kidding me?He’s acting like he’s all high and mighty, protector of the people, just doing the right thing? THAT’S the stuff that makes my blood boil!Like I said, the man lies for a living. That’s HOW he makes his money. If we were to make lying about something we did, illegal, then, as Bill Press said, “Washington would be a ghost town.”It’s the hypocracy that I hate. His lies and poor coverup attempt was bad.But to take away a man’s elected position because of this, when he did what others have done, even on a grander scale, and they’re still doing what they do, I think is a mistake. Slippery slope. I’ll see how the Ethics investigation goes.If he used staff equipment, fine him. They must have what the consequences/punishment should be for these offenses. I doubt that the punishment is resignation.

  4. Cheri, I would agree to you all the way, except that it sounds like he used his congressional office and his staff to work with some of the women, help them concoct stories to get him out of the scrape. That’s a serious violation of congressional rules. I don’t think you can even ask a staffer to pick up your dry cleaning. Using staff to help you lie your way out of a situation, and help others lie. . . That’s the problem. Again, it’s the coverup where he crossed a legal line and made an embarrassing situation into something much worse.

  5. Going to have to disagree with you on this one. As far as I have heard, and I’ve been hearing WAY TOO MUCH about this stupid non issue, this was done between consenting adults. His wife knew about it.If she’s not upset, why the hell is everyone else? If we’re going to make this the new shiny object de jour, why wasn’t the same call to step down given to John Ensign immediately? Or Coburn for his part in that whole nasty mess?HE committed adultery.Weiner didn’t hire prostitutes(Spitzer,Vitter)or solicit some guy in a bathroom(Craig)or go online to actually pick up women using another name(Lee)leave his elected duties to visit the Appalachian Trail(wink, wink)(Sanford)Leave 2 wives behind after they got sick (Gingrich)have a child with his housekeeper and keep his love child secret for 10 years(Arnold)No sex tape(Edwards)No interns involved(Clinton)and to top it off, Weiner wasn’t one of those “family values”hypocrites…oh, and I forgot John Boehner with his 2 affairs.(Lisbeth Lyons,Leigh LaMora)Why should anyone but his family give a rat’s hindend about any of this?We can all be disappointed in the lie. Absolutely. But guess what? WE ALL LIE! Especially politicians…that’s a news flash now?Personally,if Weiner wants to lie to everyone about his “surprise package” I don’t really care. And just so you don’t think this is partison, I didn’t care about the rest of the cheating bastards either. That’s THEIR business. Karma will sort it out.If Weiner is working and doing what the constituents of his district want him to do, that should be all that matters. If you want to talk about lies that really matter, and the people that say them, don’t waste precious time on Anthony Weiner. If the lies bother people so much, then why oh why don’t they pitch a fit when they hear things like, “Tax cuts don’t need to be paid for” “This is not a voucher program” “We don’t want to get rid of Social Security” or “We don’t have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem.” Those, my friend, are lies that really matter.
