It's important to know which stores are Christmas-friendly, Christmas-negligent and Christmas-offensive when you go shopping. So we owe James Dobson's Focus on the Family a vote of thanks for telling us which is which.
Just so you know what each category means:
- "Christmas-friendly" retailers — prominent acknowledgment of "Christmas"
- "Christmas-negligent" retailers — marginalized use of "Christmas"
- "Christmas-offensive" retailers — apparent abandonment of "Christmas"
The friendliest stores include Crate&Barrel, Eddie Bauer, L.L.Bean, Lowe's, Home Depot and Nordstrom. The negligents include Barnes & Noble, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, GAP and Toys "R" Us. And among those who get a lump of coal in their stockings are Banana Republic, Bloomingdale's and Old Navy.
Hope you keep those names in mind.
Sad News for Some Department: It is with great sorrow hope that I report, Focus on the Family is cutting 202 jobs "because of a weak economy and cash-strapped donors." My schadenfreude isn't directed at those losing their jobs, but at an organization so ridiculous and toxic that it never should have risen to national prominence or been taken seriously. Buh bye, Bushies.
Thanks to Salon's War Room for the Christmas list and Washington Monthly's Political Animal for the job cutting info.
