While Arizona Democrats Presented a Vision for the Future, the Republicans Put Out a Macabre One for La La Land

It was a tale of two vastly different political parties at the opening of the Arizona State Legislature on January 9, 2023 for all of Arizonans to see.

The Arizona Democrats, as they have done every year recently, presented their Blueprint for a Better Arizona of how to build strong schools, tackle the housing crisis, promote reproductive justice, solve the water and climate crisis, defend Democracy, provide equity for all, and support public safety.

2023 Dem Priorities

The vision articulated by Arizona Democratic Legislative Leaders as well as Governor Katie Hobbs in her State of the State Address shows Arizonans a positive and uplifting path forward for the state and its people.

Contrast that with the rather macabre vision of the “Insane” and “Insurrection” wing of the Republicans who dub themselves the pretentious “freedom” caucus.

Labeling Governor Hobb’s Executive Order prohibiting discrimination as “woke” and “fascist”  these individuals led by Jake Troll Farm Insurrectionists Hoffman have vowed to sue the new Administration for daring to protect people from discrimination.

Furthermore, several of them rudely walked out of the Governor’s State of the State while two others (Insurrectionist and election-denying fanatics Representative Anthony Kern and Senator Justine Wadsick) turned their backs on Ms. Hobbs during her address.

On the disrespectful behavior shown to Governor Hobbs, Democratic House Leader Andres Cano commented:

“I’ve never seen members not stand up when the Governor walks into House for the State of the State. Never. I’ve never seen members walk out during the State of the State. The disrespect for themselves, Governor Hobbs, and the institution of the House was disgraceful. The fact that certain Insurrection Caucus members stood facing backward says everything you need to know. I remain optimistic about our prospects this session because of what I heard yesterday from our Governor. But if this is what we can expect from the Insurrection Caucus, we could be in for an ugly session before it gets better. Democrats, at least, will have our eyes on the horizon, not on the rearview mirror.”

This legislative session will be a showcase for all Arizonans to see where they want to take the state: forward with opportunity for all or backward with discrimination, regression, and disinformation.

It should not be a difficult call to make.

  1. As an Arizona citizen, I thank Governor Hobbs for standing up to racism and for tackling the difficult issues Arizona faces after the GOP drove our state into the ground. As an older, Caucasian Independent with a diverse social sphere, I will NEVER vote for a Republican; they refuse to actually address any issues at all and consistently act like infants.
