The Rush Limbaugh of The Republic, Doug MacEachern, has his panties in a bunch again, hyperventilating that Obama mocks “climate deniers” in unpresidential address. Boo-freakin’-hoo, you blowhard. If the science denier Flat Earth Society shoe fits, wear it.
And no, your purposefully provocative claim that “the president employed the familiar denier language, which is designed to draw implicit parallels with ‘Holocaust deniers'” is complete and total bullshit. Only in your fevered mind, Doug, only in your fevered mind.
As Doug’s next sentence indicates, it is about science denial: “He said his political opponents were comparable to people who believe the moon is made of cheese. He talked of a congressman who ‘mentioned a theory involving ‘dinosaur flatulence.'” True that: Rep. Dana Rohrabacher: Global Warming May Have Been Caused By ‘Dinosaur Flatulence’. There’s even video, Doug.
Here’s the money quote:
And, as he so often does, he assumed the motives of his opponents to be base and unworthy.
“I’ll translate (the objections) for you,” he said. “What that really means is, ‘I know that man-made climate change really is happening, but if I admit it, I’ll be run out of town by a radical fringe that thinks climate change is a liberal plot.”
This sort of language, delivered this consistently, is simply unseemly and unworthy of a president of the United States.
There is no denying that the modern-day GOP is a radical fringe party which sees everything as a conspiracy theory and a “liberal plot.” Just read Doug’s opinions. This is not your father’s GOP: they voted to create the EPA, and voted for the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. Pointing out that true fact is not “unseemly and unworthy of a president of the United States.”
There is no denying that the modern-day GOP has become anti-science and anti-intellectual. They have redefined the “Know Nothing Party.”
The modern-day GOP is a cult religion, one that combines a modern perversion of Calvinism, The Worst Ideas of the Decade – The Prosperity Gospel (“The gospel of prosperity turns Christianity into a vapid bless-me club, with a doctrine that amounts to little more than spiritual magical thinking: If you pray the right way, God will make you rich.”), with Ayn Rand’s “objectivist ethics,” i.e., moral nihilism: the meta-ethical view that nothing is intrinsically moral or immoral. Faith in such “magical thinking” is a rejection of the objective scientific method.
Those Tea-Publicans who do not toe the line on GOP radical dogma are almost certain to be defeated in a GOP primary. Just ask Eric Cantor.
Rush, er, Doug next resorts to the right-wing talking point of Obama’s “war on coal”: “The president’s Environmental Protection Agency is launching an enforcement mission that is dedicated to eliminating coal as a source of energy.” Your payola check from the “Kochtopus” is in the mail, Doug.
A future of clean, renewable energy should be the goal of national energy policy. This tool would have the U.S. continue indefinitely with 19th Century carbon energy. It is a rejection of scientific advances and modernization to protect the vested financial interests of energy company monopolies. Doug is a defender of energy company monopolies, like APS and SRP. His true concern is for these monopolies losing their monopoly power to new competitors in a competitive renewable energy market.
What makes this hyperventilating by Rush, er, Doug so ridiculous is that the new EPA standards of which he complains are essentially an update to the “Cap and Trade” policy crafted by conservatives, and once supported by the GOP. It is the same dynamic as their rejection of the Heritage Foundation health care policy that beget RomneyCare in Massachusetts, which served as the basis for ObamaCare. Myths and Facts About EPA’s Carbon Pollution Standards. “If Obama is fer it, we’re agin’ it” – Obama Derangement Syndrome.
While Rush, er, Doug cranks up his manufactured outrage dial to 11, as the tools of the conservative media entertainment complex are wont to do, President Obama’s commencement speech at UC-Irvine was actually quite good. Here is the transcript, Remarks by the President at University of California-Irvine Commencement Ceremony, and here is the video which you can watch for yourself. Don’t take Doug’s word for it.
