Latest on Trump Foundation scandal: New York AG orders foundation to halt fundraising in New York

The New York Times reports today that the New York State Attorney General Orders Trump Foundation to Cease Raising Money in New York:

scandalThe office of New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman has issued a “notice of violation” to Donald J. Trump’s foundation, ordering it to immediately stop soliciting donations in New York.

The letter, which was sent on Friday and released on Monday morning by Mr. Schneiderman’s office, said that its charities bureau had determined that the Donald J. Trump Foundation had been fund-raising in New York this year when it was not registered to do so under state law.

“The Trump Foundation must immediately cease soliciting contributions or engaging in any other fund-raising activities in New York,” wrote James Sheehan, the chief of the charities bureau.

Trump-BarnumMr. Trump’s foundation has come under increasing scrutiny amid questions about his fulfillment of large charitable pledges and his lack of financial support in recent years.

The foundation’s compliance with the rules that govern nonprofit groups has also been a concern. The New York Times reported last month that Mr. Trump’s foundation does not show up on the charity registers in many states and The Washington Post subsequently reported that the foundation did not have the certification necessary to solicit money in New York.

While we remain very concerned about the political motives behind A.G. Schneiderman’s investigation, the Trump Foundation nevertheless intends to cooperate fully with the investigation,” Hope Hicks, Mr. Trump’s spokeswoman, said in a statement on Monday. “Because this is an ongoing legal matter, the Trump Foundation will not comment further at this time.”

Mr. Schneiderman’s office is investigating Mr. Trump’s foundation to determine if it is in compliance with state laws, including how it spends its money.

In the letter, his office provided notice to Mr. Trump’s foundation that within 15 days it must provide certain documents required to be filed by organizations that solicit contributions, including audited financial statements and annual financial reports. It also must file any “delinquent reports” for past years within that time frame.

“The failure immediately to discontinue solicitation and to file information and reports” with the charities bureau, Mr. Sheehan said, “shall be deemed a fraud upon the people of the state of New York.”

Mr. Schneiderman, a Democrat and a supporter of Mr. Trump’s opponent, Hillary Clinton, has also asserted in a separate pending case that Mr. Trump defrauded students who participated in Trump University, his for-profit educational program.

  1. There are a couple of things to remember about the New York AG stopping the Trump Foundation froming collecting donations. First, it wasn’t really collecting any donations anyway, and second, the New York AG is a long time bitter political enemy of Trumps so whatever he does is hardly newsworthy since it probably is little more than a vindictive swipe at him to hurt his campaign. After all this what the AG said he was going to do around election time.

    • You need to fact check the part about “not taking donations”.

And saying it’s political is getting tired. The Trump Foundation is a duck, Steve, walking and quaking and leaving its droppings in the yard.

      • I will guarantee you that once the election is over, and Trump doesn’t win, the entire hub-bub about the Trump Foundation will go away. The New York AG himself admitted that they knew about the Trump Foundation a year ago, but they were waiting until October 2016 to start investigating. So far, there has been much ado about very little and none of it has risen to level of an indictable offense, nor is it even getting close. Once Trump is derailed, he will go back to being ignored and the New York AG will join the Clinton White House in some high seated capacity. This stinks of politics so badly that I am surprised anyone is taking it seriously. Come to think of it, I haven’t seen anything of it on the evening news, nor heard about it on the radio nor read it in Part 1 of any of the newspapers. The Vice President Candidates barely touched it all. It may be going away already.

    • I was wondering about this.

I think there are GOTeaP people hiding their support for Trump from pollsters out of shame, and rightfully so.

And there are sane GOP people who won’t admit to voting for Clinton and against the racist/misogynist/vulgar/con man with the silly hair.

Weird to have so many Republicans in the closet.

      • I have had the same thoughts about closet Republicans hiding their support for Trump or Hillary and voting in secret. I guess we will find out on election day.

My money is they are hiding their support for Trump because I can’t see them setting aside years of contempt for Hillary and Bill in order to vote for her.
