(UPDATED)Mayors Gallego and Romero Offer Their Views on Today’s State Supreme Court Decision Outlawing Women’s Reproductive Freedom

The Mayors of two of Arizona’s most renowned cities were quick to condemn the Arizona Supreme Court’s Handmaids-Back in Time to the Civil War decision outlawing most abortions in the Grand Canyon State.

Appearing with many leading Democrats (including Attorney General Kris Mayes and prominent legislators) at a press event at the Capitol Rose Garden, Phoenix Mayor and Biden/Harris National Advisory Board Member Kate Gallego spoke on the need to reelect the Biden/Harris ticket and defeat Donald Trump and those who would permanently take away women’s reproductive freedom and health care.

Saying today’s State Supreme Court ruling “Is dangerous,” reminding viewers that this ban “was written 160 years ago before people understood modern medicine and we have to change it.”

She later called the Civil War Era ban and the Supreme Court decision reaffirming it “out of touch” and “infringing on our most basic rights.”

Mayor Gallego then called out Donald Trump for being most responsible for the current threat to women’s reproductive freedom and health care with his appointment of three of the justices that overturned Roe v Wade and setting women’s rights “back decades.”

On women’s loss of basic health and reproductive freedom rights, she said “The girls today and the young women do not have the rights that we once did because of Donald Trump.”

The Mayor also called Trump, “dangerous and reckless.”

In her call to action, the Mayor said that it was essential to reelect the Biden/Harris ticket, saying “They will fight to protect women. They will fight to protect our basic health care, IVF, and access to contraceptives.”

Saying “We have to deliver,” Ms. Gallego said “The path to the Presidency goes through Arizona and the path to protect abortion rights goes through Arizona. We must meet this moment. We must mobilize…President Biden and Vice President Harris will fight for women’s health and fight for Arizona. Together, we will defeat those who will threaten our most basic freedoms. We must remember in November.”

Later on social media, the Mayor posted:

Tucson Mayor Regina Romero, along with Pima County Attorney Laura Conover also held a press event in Tucson. According to a press release from the Biden/Harris Campaign, Ms. Romero offered:

“We have a choice to look ahead to a United States where access to abortion and reproductive health care, for the right of people to make their own health care decisions, is protected by reelecting Joe Biden and Kamala Harris – period. We have no other choice if you believe in reproductive freedom for all in this country. Today, we have a choice to make sure that Donald Trump, the person that is claiming responsibility for bringing down Roe v. Wade, for ripping away right after right, attacking medication abortion, attacking IVF contraception, etc., that Donald Trump is never returned to the White House. Just yesterday, Donald Trump made a statement about leaving abortion decisions to states. This is what it means, this is what it means in Arizona: it means a near total abortion ban taking us back to 1864.”

Later, the Mayor issued a statement on social media condemning today’s ruling that read:

“Today’s decision by the Arizona Supreme Court is devastating to women, girls, and people who can become pregnant across our state. The near-total abortion ban puts the lives of people across our state at risk!
This is a huge step backward, and let’s not misunderstand, this decision is about control, control over women’s bodies. We know that criminalizing abortion will not stop people from having abortions – it will simply make them more unsafe. I will continue to do everything in my power, working with our Governor, Attorney General, and County Attorney to fight for access to abortion and reproductive healthcare.”

  1. Politics need to be aware of ther actions because when a state can force a women to have a baby that she doesn’t want to have, these same women can bring lawsuits against that stat for child support for that child until he or she is 18.

That can bankrupt a state. You have to look a the big picture to know when and how to pass laws and restrictions, and can backfire.
