As I write CD 8 Dems looks like Giffords walking away. CD 8 GOP looks like a two way between Graf and Huffman which is still too close to call. CD 1 looks like Simon.

LD 28 Senate has Aboud in the lead. LD 28 House looks like Bradley and Farley’s team-up will work well for Farley.

AZ SPI looks like Williams has an early lead on Mead.

AZ GOP Governor is a battle between Munsil and Goldwater. For now Munsil has the lead. Looks like McCain helped him.

UPDATE 11:22pm: Early trends held on all races above. Munsil opened a definitive lead and took the GOP Governor nomination.

Yet again, moderate Republicans took a serious beating across the board in state legislative races, carrying the majority even further right, and lowering the average IQ of both chambers by many points.

Some of the worst news of the evening: in LD 26 Toni Hellon went down to her quite likely insane primary opponent Melvin. In LD 26 Rush Limbaugh clone Jorgensen beat out far more reasonable Lovallo and Somers for a House nomination. In LD 21 reasonable Republican Wallace failed to get the nod for a House seat. Likewise, in LD 22 the reasonable Toby failed to get a nomination for State House.

Some of the best news of the evening: in LD 8 Sen. Allen held off a challenge by wack-job Rosati. In LD 30 Reps. Paton and McClure held off challenging wingers. In LD 26 Pete Hershberger is staying around, even if he’s joined by Jorgensen rather than a more congenial colleague.

Biggest upset of the evening: Don Chilton beating out Herb Paine for the Dem nomination in CD 3. The race between Chilton and Paine remains too close to call, and will likely not be decided for 5 or more days. Nobody expected that, except maybe Don.

And the absolute best news of the evening: Randy Graf has a decisive lead over Huffman with 90% of polls reporting. The GOP has officially gone insane. Should be interesting to see how, and if, the Republican Congressional Committee, who has been running ads against Graf, will kiss and make up with their new candidate. Some think that Huffman would have been an easier general election opponent for Giffords; he’s a crappy campaigner, he has about zero charisma, he’s dirtied up as hell, and the base hates his guts. All true. But I’ll still take Randy, his guns, his PGA rule book, and his Minuteman badge.
