Today is the 75th Anniversary of the Social Security Act, the most popular and most successful government program in history. Social Security has kept many millions of elderly and the disabled from living destitute lives in abject poverty. Social Security is a solemn moral obligation from one generation to the next generation that the elderly may live out their final years with dignity and security.
Conservatives have wanted to kill Social Security ever since Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law, not because the program does not work as intended, but because it represents the signature achievement of the New Deal that conservatives would like to repeal and erase from history. Their hatred for FDR continues to the present day.
Republican president Dwight D. Eisenhower had harsh words for these conservatives:
"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."
And yet, the modern-day Republican Party has been hijacked by this "tiny splinter group" of "stupid" conservatives who want to revise history and to privatize Social Security with their "Roadmap to America's Future (Ruin)."
