Giffords to speak at first annual African American Democratic Caucus reception Saturday
January 14, 2010
by David Safier
Regrettably, prior commitments mean I won't be able to attend this event, but that doesn't stop others from going. It sounds like one of those minor/major (take your pick) historic events for Tucson. It's the first of what promises to be an annual event.
The first annual Reception for the Pima County Democratic African American Caucus will be held at Pima Dem headquarters (4639 E. First Street, near Speedway and Swan) this Saturday, January 16, 5pm. According to the press release, the event is "open to ALL Democrats who want to move Arizona forward."
Rep. Giffords will address the group, and lots of other notables will be there.
Public officials expected to attend this event include Arizona Corporation Commissioner Sandra Kennedy, Tucson City Council Members Richard Fimbres and Shirley Scott, Florence City Council Member Vallarie Woolridge and Affirmative Action Moderator for the Arizona Democratic Party Gerald Richard, who will be delivering the keynote address.

TUSD doing school closures right
January 14, 2010
by David Safier This is encouraging. After last year's debacle where TUSD tried to close some schools from the top down and got so much blowback it retreated, this year the district is trying a rewards based, bottom up approach that appears to be bearing fruit. TUSD has told schools, if you can join together
“Report: Public universities becoming ‘far richer, far whiter’”
January 14, 2010
by David Safier Sigh. I posted the other day about rising tuition costs nationwide moving access to college back toward the rich, which is a dramatic reversal of our recent efforts toward greater social mobility through higher education. When money, not merit, determines who get the college degrees from the top schools, mediocrity and increased

Tucson elections case goes to trial January 19
January 14, 2010
Posted by AzBlueMeanie: Last year Sen. Jonathan Paton (R-LD 30), the wannabe dictator of Tucson, shepherded a special bill through the Arizona Legislature designed to punish the "liberal bastion" of Tucson by using state law to override the Tucson City Charter and dictating to Tucson that its elections engage in the fiction of being nonpartisan,
Was California’s Prop 8 election stolen?
January 13, 2010
by David Safier Election integrity issues have quieted down, at least for now, in Arizona. Whatever the truth about the RTA vote controversy, the counting of the ballots has taken the wind out of the media sails of those who think the election was stolen. The RTA vote question, which got quite a bit of
Indications are that State Sen. John Huppenthal doesn’t appreciate irony
January 13, 2010
By Craig McDermott Wednesday afternoon, State Sen. John Huppenthal chaired a meeting of the Senate Education Committee. Much of the meeting was an exercise in campaign positioning (he's running for state superintendant of public instruction this year). That positioning included inviting Matthew Ladner of the Goldwater Institute to give a presentation on the "wonderful" statistical
G.I.: Illogical legal logic?
January 13, 2010
by David Safier I'm not making this post part of my Fool's Gold series, because I may be the fool rushing in where paralegals fear to tread. Be that as it may . . . Today's Goldwater Daily Email is from Nick Dranias, the Director of their Center for Constitutional Government. He argues that Arizona
