Information is beginning to trickle in about the nature of federal bailout money that could go to states.
For me, the most important passage of this article is, states won't get federal money to replace dollars they cut:
Some portions of the package may not provide a net increase to Arizona if they prevent lawmakers from making cuts.
For example, to get education funding for poor schools, worth an estimated $257 million to Arizona, states may be required to add on to existing services, rather than simply plug holes left by state budget cuts.
Legislative leaders are contemplating $890 million in cuts to K-12 this year and next, including lump-sum reductions of roughly $240 million.
Budget analysts say state lawmakers will be able to reject some portions of the package and accept others.
So if we cut money, we get less money. If we keep funding stable or add to it, we get more money. And states can pick and choose from the menu, cafeteria style.
The plot thickens.

“Things will be butt-ugly in education”
Yea, as opposed to how well things will turn out if Arizona government is allowed to continue to tax and borrow and spend. I mean it worked so very well for Janet Napolitano didn’t it? The government can just borrow and spend forever can’t it?
Tax, borrow and spend advocates call it (it being spending cuts) ugly. The rest of us call it living within our means. Arizona government has been spending beyond its means for years. Fear mongering about government education spending cuts is only a defense mechanism that presupposes that government employees continued employment is more important than any other factor (definitely more important than reality).
it won’t matter to the Russell Pearces and Capt Als in the leg… they don’t want the money from the fed…..
Have they released info on how they are going to cut $$ from this year’s K-12 budget, yet?? They have to go to the voters if they want to shorten the school year, since the 180-day SY was a part of voter-approved Prop 301. They also need to be careful that they don’t cut funds to programs that are tied to Federal matching funds.
Things will be butt-ugly in education in AZ if Brewer and the Bozos get their way with the budget…
