Adrian Fontes, Democratic candidate for Arizona Secretary of State in 2022, today released the following statement:
“On October 28th, I was contacted by the Arizona Attorney General’s office. A special agent was dispatched to interview me to discuss the processes followed at the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office during the 2020 election when I was still the county Recorder. I agreed to the interview and participated voluntarily.
“Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich is a Republican politician running behind in a heated primary for the US Senate, a primary whose winner is only crowned if they have the backing of Donald Trump.
“What became clear to me after engaging with the office of Attorney General Brnovich is that this is merely a political stunt intended to benefit Brnovich’s 2022 Senate race by inflaming the delusions of conspiracy theorists. This is not a genuine effort to investigate the election process of 2020, which has already been picked apart and scrutinized relentlessly.”
“This is a sad and dangerous situation. After the Arizona state Senate’s embarrassment of an “audit”, we now have a separate branch of government that has surrendered to the influence of a potential authoritarian dictator, in the United States of America. This pattern of official power used for raw political gamesmanship should serve as a clarion call to all reasonable Americans, our democracy is under assault.”
“We cannot overstate the seriousness of this moment – law enforcement agents have been dispatched at taxpayer expense to advance conspiracy theories and proven falsehoods for purely political reasons. Never in American history has any single person bent and twisted what it means to be an American prosecutor for the benefit of authoritarian aspirations. These actions by Brnovich signal the beginning of the end of American democracy, unless he and those like him can be stopped.”

“I proudly stand by the entire Maricopa County 2020 and the County’s current election teams. We are ALL Americans first, and we have continued to put country over party. Our work in 2020 successfully stands as the most highly scrutinized and most widely validated election in American history. I will never turn my back on those successful efforts and the professional, multi-partisan team who made Maricopa 2020 among the best American elections ever.”
Ed.: As bad as it is currently having a partisan Attorney General trying his best to gain Trump’s attention and favor by pursuing a groundless partisan inquiry based on the Cyber Ninjas’ #AZFraudit, imagine having such a person in charge of our elections! That is exactly the concern about Oathkeeper and Jan 6th insurrectionist Mark Finchem.
