AFS Press conference on prison privatization

by David Safier

This notice for a February 15 press conference in Phoenix organized by the American Friends Service Committee is a bit early, but they're organizing carpools for Tusconans to participate, so I'm putting it up now.

PRISON PRIVATIZATION PRESS CONFERENCE 2-15

The American Friends Service Committee will send delegations of volunteers to meet with key legislators and the governor Tuesday, February 15 in Phoenix. The purpose will be to deliver the testimonies and other materials gathered through our Public Hearing on Prison Privatization in Tucson, October 27, 2010.

At 11AM we will gather on the House lawn for a brief press conference to report on our meetings, discuss our opposition to prison privatization and renew our call for immediate cancellation of the recently re-released RFP for 5,000 new private prison beds in Arizona. Our most immediate concerns have to do with public safety (due to escapes from private prisons), the higher costs of private prisons and the lack of accountability.

Carpools from Tucson will be organized – please contact us at 520-623-9141 or email cisaacs@afsc.org to participate. Also please contact people in Phoenix who might be interested in attending the press conference.
