The Arizona Republic today published this letter to the editor An open letter to Sen. John McCain:
Dear Sen. McCain,
I'm requesting your help in the health care debate. Opponents of President Barack Obama's plan have publicly called him a Nazi. Using this word puts all discourse into the arena of hate speech.
My father, James McQuaid, was a navigator with the 8th Air Force in 1943. He flew 50 missions over Nazi Germany. He never allowed us kids to call anyone a Nazi. He, too, was a Republican, and he would have had nothing but contempt for anyone who used the word "Nazi" to describe the president.
Sen. McCain, my father was your personal pilot when you first campaigned for the Senate. He thought you were an honorable man. Prove him right. Step up to the plate and tell the country that using the word "Nazi" is unacceptable.
It's a disgrace to good men like my dad and to the millions of people who died under the Nazi regime. It's an insult to the flag you fought for. Be an honorable man and tell people to knock it off.
– Maggie McQuaid, Bisbee
