Legislative District 30 Republican precinct committeemen have selected three nominees to send to the Pima County Board of Supervisors. Rhonda Bodfield was at the game! Precinct panel favors Antenori to replace Paton:
Rep. Frank Antenori was the top choice of the precinct committee members in Legislative District 30 to fill the state Senate seat vacated when Jonathan Paton stepped down to run for Congress.
Antenori, who won 71 of 77 available votes at an election meeting Sunday, will be on the slate of three names of Republicans forwarded to the Pima County Board of Supervisors.
Former state Sen. Randy Graf will also be in the mix, as will Ted Vogt, the 37-year-old Republican chairman of District 30 who would be new to elected office outside of party functions.
Supervisors are expected to name a replacement at their meeting Tuesday.
The only mild surprise here is that former state legislator Bill McGibbon lost to Randy "I want to secede from Pima County!" Graf, with Graf winning 59 votes.
Supervisor Ray Carroll, a Republican who represents the area, said he will ask the Board to support Antenori. No one on the Board much likes Ray Carroll, nor much cares for his opinion.
Graf is a goner, and "Don't make me angry" Frank Antenori tried to extort this appointment from the Pima County Board of Supervisors. Selecting Antenori would mean another district election to fill his House seat. It's not hard to project the winner here — Ted Vogt, the Republican chairman of District 30 (who has been rumored to be interested in running for the House seat).
Mr. Vogt already has the GOP jingoistic bumper sticker sloganeering thing down to a tee, telling the audience he would "fight for your freedom and your wallet" if appointed. He pledged to go to Phoenix "to return your money and your power back to you." Really? District 30 Republicans have taken the lead in making Pima County subservient to Maricopa County Republican control. Why should anyone believe this?
I guess District 30 was serving Kool-Aid with the cookies yesterday.
