Arizona Daily Star Endorses Juan Padres for Ward 3 and Councilman Steve Kozachik for Ward 6 Council races

The Democratic primary for Ward 3 and 6 in the Tucson City Council races is coming up on August 3, 2021.  Only the City of Tucson voters/residents in Ward 3 and Ward 6 vote in these primaries. There is no primary in Ward 5 as Democratic Councilman Richard Fimbres is running unopposed.

The Arizona Daily Star editorial board endorsed businessman Juan Padres for the open seat in Ward 3.  Councilman Paul Durham resigned in March 2021 due to personal reasons, and former Councilwoman Karin Uhlich was appointed to that seat for the remainder of 2021.  Conservation activist Kevin Dahl is also running in Ward 3.  Padres ran against District 3 incumbent Pima County Supervisor Sharon Bronson in the Democratic primary in August 2020.  Bronson got 56.99%, Padres 43.01% of the vote.

In Ward 6 the Star endorsed 3 term incumbent Steve Kozachik, who is running for re-election. He faces opposition from two Democrat political newcomers Andres Portela III and Miranda Schubert.  Kozachik first ran as a Republican in 2009 defeating incumbent Democrat Councilwoman Nina Trasoff, then he ran as a Democrat for re-election in 2013 and 2017.  Portela is a former aide to Ward 1 Councilmember Lane Santa Cruz, and Schubert is an academic advisor at the UA College of Medicine.
