AZ Dems unveil redistricting watchdog project
Drawing a New Arizona Project will monitor process crucial to future of state
PHOENIX — The Arizona Democratic Party is launching the Drawing a New Arizona Project to monitor and protect the integrity of the redistricting process, which is now under way to redraw Arizona’s congressional and legislative boundaries.
The Drawing a New Arizona Project will serve as a watchdog to ensure the creation of fair, competitive districts that respect Arizona's diverse communities. It will monitor the decisions of the Independent Redistricting Commission and keep people informed throughout this crucial process.
"The redistricting commission's decisions will have an enormous impact on Arizona's future," said Andrei Cherny, Arizona Democratic Party chairman. "This is a once-in-a-decade chance to positively change Arizona politics."
Republicans have been in power at the state Capitol for most of the last 40 years, despite voter registration numbers that give them only a modest advantage over Democrats and Independents. The Arizona Democratic Party will stand up for the public to guarantee decisions are made in the best interests of everyone's future and to protect the independence of the commission from political influence and lawsuits.
"Getting this right means changing Arizona's political landscape for the better," Cherny said. "We must watch out for the interests of every Arizonan."
