Arizona Leaders led by State Attorney General Kris Mayes Applaud Supreme Court Ruling Against Trump Tariffs

The word for the day in Democratic and sane Republican political and economic circles today is Hallejuah.

Today, in a six-to-three ruling, the United States Supreme Court ruled that Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs by declaring emergency powers was unconstitutional and that he overstepped his authority in levying tariffs, which is the purview of Congress and its taxation authority.

Unfortunately, the Court did not provide guidance on how to give the tariffs proceeds already taken by the American Duce Wannabe’s regime back to the American People.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes was part of the lawsuit that challenged the Trump position in the Supreme Court.

After the decision, Mayes released the below video on social media.

Calling the decision “Great news,” Mayes went on to say:

“This means that Arizonans and Americans will no longer have to deal with these essentially taxes on them. The Attorneys General brought this case because they knew these taxes/tariffs were going to impact/are impacting our economy and that they are illegal…”

Ms. Mayes office also issued a statement where the Attorney General conveyed:

“Today is a great day for Arizona families. Today is a great day for America. The court has spoken clearly: President Trump’s tariffs were illegal. The statutes used by the President did not authorize him to impose these tariffs. And thanks to the lawsuit filed by my office and our coalition of fellow attorneys general, today they have been struck down.

Let’s be honest about what these tariffs actually were — an illegal tax on American families and businesses. And the President cannot impose taxes on the American people without the consent of their elected representatives in Congress.

According to the nonpartisan Tax Foundation, the average household lost $1,000 last year under Trump’s tariffs. That means families stretching grocery budgets, small businesses watching their margins disappear or being forced out of business entirely.

All year, Americans have watched prices climb and wondered if anyone in power was going to do anything about it. We did something about it.

This case was about more than just tariffs or economic policy. It was about the rule of law and American Democracy. The rule of law is worth fighting for. American Democracy is worth fighting for. Today, we won one of those fights.”

The Attorney General also held a press event to celebrate the Supreme Court ruling striking down “The Trump Overreach.”

While Trump held an event at the White House Press Room, denouncing the Justices who supported the ruling, while vowing to find another way, as provided in the dissent of the three Justices who voted against the decision, to levy tariffs that working and middle class Americans will continue to be on the hook for, Arizona’s other leading Democrats voiced their approval for the Supreme Court’s actions today.

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs issued a statement that read:

This is a victory for Arizona’s small businesses, families, and overall economy.

President Trump’s reckless tariffs—the largest tax hike on Americans in decades—have wreaked havoc on our economy and caused chaos for Arizona’s small businesses and families. Over the past year, I’ve spoken directly with small business owners, farmers, and food distributors across our state who are being hit hard. Here in Arizona, we’ve experienced clear and tangible impacts from these harmful decisions, including a slowdown in progress, the loss of jobs, and the disruption of important investments.

At a time when Arizonans are already facing high costs, and with tariffs proven to be a major contributing factor, I feel relieved. Relieved for the small businesses and families who had to shoulder the extra costs on essentials like groceries and housing.

While the damage of these tariffs cannot be corrected overnight, I will continue to do everything I can to increase affordability and connect Arizonans to good-paying jobs and grow our economy, as I have for the past three years.

I will continue to fight to cut taxes and lower costs for working people in Arizona, and I will never stop fighting against DC decisions that raise costs for Arizonans.”

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego offered:

This decision brings real relief to Phoenix families and small businesses hit hard by rising tariff costs. Thank you to @AZAGMayes for leading this case all the way to the Supreme Court.

Representative Yassamin Ansari posted:

“SCOTUS’s decision helps American families, small businesses, and farmers across the country as Donald Trump continues to make their lives more expensive. Trump’s idiotic trade war must end.”

Representative Adelita Grijalva wrote in a statement:

“Trump’s tariffs are a tax paid for by the American people, plain and simple. Research shows that rising costs have been passed on almost entirely to American consumers. While I welcome the Supreme Court’s decision, the reality is that the damage has been done for far too many families and small businesses. This is especially true in border communities like those I represent, where small businesses that rely on cross-border trade, agricultural producers, and working families have all felt the squeeze as prices rise and supply chains are disrupted.”

“Trump is not a king. His actions to side step Congress are harming the economy, local communities, and Arizona families. That’s why I voted last week to rein in this executive overreach and reassert Congress’ rightful role as a check and balance.”

Representative Greg Stanton posted:

Senator Mark Kelly relayed in two posts:

This is a huge win for American families and small businesses who’ve had to deal with rising costs because of Donald Trump’s illegal tariffs.”

Standing up for Arizona and taking these fights to court is what @AZAGMayes does every day. Today’s decision is good news for Arizonans who are just trying to get ahead. Thank you, Kris Mayes!”

Like Kelly, Senator Ruben Gallego issued several social media posts praising the Court ruling and condeming Trump’s reaction, including:

Good. But we can’t let up. We must ensure this administration doesn’t try to find another avenue for its reckless and illegal tariffs. We must ensure corporations actually lower prices and small businesses are refunded. And we in Congress must reassert and protect our authority over tariffs.”

Arizona is full of leaders who don’t back down. Thank you @AZAGMayes for taking action and fighting back against Trump’s reckless and illegal tariffs. That’s what standing up for your state looks like.”

Hardworking people have been paying the price for Trump’s reckless and illegal tariffs. Today, instead of working to lower prices and pay back the money he owes the American people, he’s doubled down on charging them more.”

Arizona House Democratic Leader Oscar De Los Santos posted:

“HUGE: In a lawsuit filed by @AZAGMayes, the US Supreme Court rules Trump’s tariffs are ILLEGAL. Thank you Attorney General Mayes, for killing this illegal tax on American families and businesses that were hurting us while prices spiral out of control.”

He also posted these two entries calling out Trump for his announcement of a ten percent tariff across the board via Executive Order and also his “insane” lies that he has solved the affordability crisis:
