Arizona’s Legislative Republicans are advancing a strange agenda this election year.
Among the policies they have put on paper this legislative session
- Putting ICE agents at polling places on Election Day.
- Discriminating against LGBTQ children.
- Naming highways after Donald Trump and Charlie Kirk.
- Giving permission for waste, fraud, and abuse in the Welfare/Scam for the Rich and Crooked Empowerment Scholarship Private School Voucher Program, where people can buy condoms and lingerie with no full transparency from the Arizona Department of Education.
- Making life more expensive by not reducing higher utility costs from Data Centers.
- Kicking people off food assistance when one in five Arizona children goes hungry.
Not exactly the political and economic agenda to win hearts and minds this campaign season.
In an opinion piece for Tucson.com, Arizona Legislative District 17 Representative Kevin Volk wrote that while Arizona House Republicans waste time “on…bills that have been previously vetoed, the party-line bills, and the pork-barrel bills (while) issues like child care — a major cost of living concern for Arizona families — receive zero time on the calendar.”
On the House floor this week, Democratic leaders Oscar De Los Santos and Nancy Guiterrez condemned the House Republican Bill 2940 which would take people off the Arizona SNAP-Food Assistance Program.
Again, according to St. Vincent dePaul, “More than one million Arizonans experience food insecurity, with 1 in 7 adults and 1 in 5 children experiencing a lack of food throughout the week. “
Guiterrez and De Los Santos pointed out this measure would “take food off the kitchen table during an affordability crisis” and kick off vulnerable people, including the elderly, who deserve to live their golden years without fear of discomfort; the veterans who served and protected the nation; and the children and the disabled who can not fully fend for themselves.
On an amendment to SB1419 that would have shifted high utility costs from Arizona families to the Data Centers that cause them, Senate Democratic Leader Priya Sundareshan said on the Senae floor:
“What we’re doing in this body is not helping get to an Arizona we can afford. Regular Arizonans should not be footing the bills for these data centers and large corporations that are causing our electricity costs to increase.”
Arizona Legislative Democrats are advancing an affordability agenda that will help lift people up.
Arizona Legislative Republicans are advancing a screw working and middle class agenda designed to pin people down.
Voters need to remember this on election day next November.
