Arizona Leading the Nation to Clean Elections

Sixdollars
What do Bill Bradley, Bob Kerrey, Warren Rudman, and Alan Simpson have in common? Well, besides being former eminent U.S. Senators, not much. But they do agree on one thing: they all admire Arizona’s Clean Elections system and want to bring a similar system of publically financed election to the federal government. They have all endorsed a bi-partisan effort for public finance of federal election campaigns.

They figured out that if you add up the current cost of all federal elections – House, Senate, and President – the cost equals just $6 per citizen. Is the corruption of our political system not worth just $6 to stop? Does the cost of corporate give-aways and pork barrel spending far exceed just $6 per citizen? Wouldn’t the new pool of political leadership that now languishes unused because they haven’t the contacts, or the will, to raise millions to run for office not worth just $6 per citizen?

Connecticut just passed the first legislatively approved state-wide public finance system in the country (prior systems have been voter initiatives or local). Now is the time to start the push to free our political system from the thrall of big money. We can do it for just $6.
