Arizona’s 2022 State-Wide Citizens’ Initiatives

Pima County Democratic Party has put together a list of the voter initiatives currently gathering signatures, along with recommendations on which ones to support.

Prevent Cruelty to Farm Animals – Support

  • Petition Serial Number: I-01-2022
  • Signatures Due: July 27, 2022
  • Prohibits farm owners from knowingly confining certain animals for consumption in a cruel manner and prohibits business owners from selling animal products made from protected animals confined in a cruel manner. 

 

Voters Right to Know Act (Stop Dark Money) Support 

  • Petition Serial Number: I-04-2022
  • Signatures Due: July 7, 2022
  • Secures for voters the right to know who is trying to influence Arizona elections by requiring anyone spending over $50,000 on statewide campaigns or $25,000 on other campaigns to disclose the original sources of contributions over $5,000. They must also disclose their largest donors on campaign materials.

 

Predatory Debt Collection Protection Act (Healthcare Rising) Support 

  • Petition Serial Number: I-05-2022
  • Signatures Due: July 7, 2022
  • Limits the interest rate on medical debt and increases the amount of assets that are protected from being sold to pay off debt collectors. 

 

Arizonans for Voter ID Act – Oppose 

  • Petition Serial Number: I-08-2022
  • Signatures Due: July 7, 2022
  • Requires those voting in person at early voting locations and on election day to show valid photo identification to vote and those voting my mail to include identification on mail-in ballots. It also requires election officials to verify this identification information and provides Arizona electors legal grounds to sue to enforce this measure.

 

Students for Affordable TuitionSupport 

  • Petition Serial Number: I-09-2022
  • Signatures Due: July 7, 2022
  • Requires Arizona to pay an additional two-percentage point surcharge on their corporate income tax Unless Arizona pays at least fifty percent of the actual cost of tuition for undergraduate, resident students attending public Arizona universities. Also caps tuition for undergraduate students at the rate charged initially at the time of the student’s enrollment.  

 

Arizona Fire District Safety Act – Support

  • Petition Serial Number: I-12-2022
  • Signatures Due: July 7, 2022
  • Would impose a temporary additional sales tax of one-tenth of one percent for a period of 20 years and distribute this additional revenue generated between the 144 fire districts in Arizona.

 

Arizonans for Free and Fair Elections (AZAdvocacy.org) – Support

  • Petition Serial Number: I-13-2022
  • Signatures Due: July 7, 2022
  • Expands voting access by increasing accessibility for disabled persons, restoring PEVL, strengthening early voting and increasing polling sites on indigenous lands. Limits the legislature’s ability to affect the people’s choice by restricting legislative subpoenas on election materials and prohibiting them from changing Arizona’s vote for president or adding new registration requirements. Increases equity in campaign funding by reducing contribution limits for privately funded candidates and raising funds for Clean Elections candidates.

 

Easier to Vote, Harder to Cheat Act – Oppose

  • Petition Serial Number: I-15-2022
  • Signatures Due: July 7, 2022
  • Expands election observation rights. Prohibits internet connections of voting tabulating equipment during voting and tabulation. Requires online posting of ballot images. Ends early voting and early ballots on Friday before election day. Requires early ballot tabulation by 11 :00 p.m. on election day. Speeds deadline for early ballot signature curing and ends emergency early voting.
