Senator John McCain has a suggestion for who should serve on the "Satan Sandwich" Commission. John McCain suggests former Bush budget director Rob Portman for Super Congress (no, really):
"I’m not making the decisions but one of my candidates would be Rob Portman, former head of OMB. A very sober, knowledgeable person, I think those are the kind of people that are going to be on this committee," told Neil Cavuto Tuesday on Fox News.
Prior to becoming a senator, Portman served as the head of the Office of Management and Budget in former President George W. Bush's administration.
The great thing about this is that Rob Portman wasn't just head of Bush's budget office; he also voted for both of Bush's tax cuts and for Bush's invasion of Iraq, so when he talks about fiscal nightmares, he knows exactly what he's talking about. After all, he created the one that we'e in. It's a stroke of brilliance right up there with tapping Bristol Palin to be a spokeswoman for teen abstinence.
Then there is Senator "not intended to be a factual statement" Kyl who has exceeded his alloted limit for outrageous statements in the past week. Everytime this fool opens his mouth I am compelled by some force of nature to shout out "what an asshole!" Jim Nintzel at the Tucson Weekly is more creative in his response. After Holding Gun to the Economy's Head, Kyl Doesn't Like Holding Gun To Military's Head | The Range:
Sen. Jon Kyl isn't happy with the potential cuts to the defense budget if the super-committee can't come to an agreement:
"Can you imagine anything more irresponsible than for the commander in chief of the military to promote, not just promote, but insist on the knowing destruction of the U.S. military as a means to threaten Congress?" Kyl asked in a speech on the Senate floor shortly before he voted for the legislation.
Although he [voted for] the bill, Kyl said it came close to violating the oath of office for lawmakers as well as the president's responsibilities as commander in chief.
"We will need to work very hard to restore spending necessary for our national security and commit to reject the threat of Armageddon inserted into this bill by the White House," Kyl said.
Actually, we can imagine something more irresponsible than the scenario Kyl is describing: A Republican Party that insists on the knowing destruction of the global economy as a means to threaten the president. In case you didn't notice, Sen. Kyl, that's what your party just did.
Guess what: If you want to keep spending all that money on the military, you just might have to raise taxes to do it. That's why the trigger is in there: Because it has to be something that will be painful to both sides in order to create an incentive for both sides to honestly bargain with one another. You can't just keep targeting widows and orphans so the rich can keep their taxes low, Senator.
Arizona's twin embarrassments make us the laughingstock of the nation, a political backwater of ignorant goobers represented by tweedle-dumb and tweedle-dumber. Get some self-respect, people. We have got to be able to do better than this!
