The Star's Timothy Steller has been working on an article about BASIS Charter School, which is set to appear in the Sunday paper. BASIS has a very strong — and most probably well deserved — reputation for educational excellence. But like other charter schools in the state, it's hard to peer into its inner workings. School districts and their individual schools are pretty much an open book. Not so charters, which aren't held to nearly the same level of accountability even though they run on the same taxpayer dollars.
Steller's article promises to reveal some interesting facts about salaries at BASIS and about some of the people on the payroll. I've Facebooked (Has that become an acceptable verb? I don't care, I'm using it.) with him a few times, and we had a phone conversation where we talked about BASIS and charter schools in general. He's asking some important questions.
I'm looking forward to the article. I'm sure BASIS' overall reputation will stand. But I'm hoping the article leads people to start asking questions about the lack of charter school transparency.
