A former public defender for Maricopa County and the federal government, Mr. McWhirter, if elected to become the next Arizona Attorney General would work to:

  • Protect Democracy, real election integrity, and every Arizonan’s right to vote.
  • Ensure justice for everyone and not just the privileged few.
  • Combat racial disparity in Arizona incarceration rates.
  • Protect consumers from fraud and bad vendors.

Mr. McWhirter would fight the Trumpists that are threatening the American Ideal and work to make Arizona a beacon for equal justice for all.

Mr. McWhirter graciously took the time to discuss his candidacy for Arizona State Attorney General.

The questions and his responses are below.

1) What are two or three reasons you are running for Arizona State Attorney General?

  • “Democracy: this race is about democracy. Well, more than any other in my memory, democracy is a real issue. The fact that we are talking about that is frightening. I want to be across from the Republicans in the next debate and look right them right in the eye and ask him or her if Joe Biden won the election. If they will not say, I will tell them they are a threat to Democracy and have no business being on the stage.
  • This office is about justice for all and not just for some. For too long the Arizona Attorney General has been looking out for the rich and the powerful and now it just wants to be a satellite of the Trump Administration and the Big Lie.”

2) If elected, what would be your top three priorities as Arizona State Attorney General?

  • “Make sure we have election integrity, meaning everyone should have the right to vote. The wasted resources in that office towards perpetuating the big lie of voter fraud is damaging democracy and it is part of their attempt to stop people from voting. Every American has the right to vote. The wasted tonic chasing these allegations of voter fraud could go towards ensuring everyone’s right to vote is secured and consumers are protected.
  • Criminal Justice reform: we need to totally look at issues of racial disparity in our system and our over-incarceration which is damaging to society, individuals, and taxpayers.
  • Consumer protection: most of that means stopping people from being defrauded and stopping robocalls.”

3) What are at least two reasons voters should pick you over any of your opponent’s running for Attorney General?

  • “I am a lifelong Democrat. I did not become a Democrat just for this race.
  • I have been fighting for over 30 years as a criminal and civil rights lawyer.
  • I am the only one with significant administrative experience.
  • I am the one people can depend on to fight these fights and fight for democracy and democratic values.”

4) Based on the Republican enabling of the Big 2020 Election Lie through members of the legislature, the current Attorney Generals’ office, and what went on in Veterans Memorial Colosseum, to what extent do you think it will be difficult to restore voter trust across the political spectrum?

“The first thing we have to do is fight the lie. If you start from that lie, it creates fiction and illegitimacy which is an attack not just on President Biden but on democracy itself. To not accept the results of an election is simply UnAmerican. We need to get back in touch with what makes America great. We need to remind Americans that we can be great again. We need to remind them why we are great. I, like all the Democrats I have met in LD Meetings, are not willing to let democracy die with our generation.”

5) Is there anything not covered in the first four questions that you would like the voters to know about you and your candidacy for Attorney General? Please explain.

“I am the one that has always been on the front line fighting for these issues. I wrote the bar complaint that got Andrew Thomas disbarred. When I was fighting Andy Thomas and Joe Arpaio, elected Republicans stood by and did nothing. When my fellow attorneys and I went all-in against the Trump lawyers, Republicans were once again, silent.  We can’t afford to have those who would stay silent during the times of greatest injustice be allowed to consider themselves for important leadership roles.”

I recently wrote the bar complaint against the Trump lawyers that were promoting the Big Lie about the 2020 elections. Trump and his minions are bullies, and I will not be bullied any more than any other person in our LDs and the Democrats fighting to save democracy. We are not willing to let the light die.”
