At Least He Did Not Mention Hannibal Lecter: Trump Offers a Dystopian and Imperialist Vision for the “Golden Age of America”

In a speech with a cesspool of lies, distortions, half-truths, self-centered platitudes, imperialistic ambition, and a blatant attempt to rewrite history, Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President today.

For those who said his second inauguration speech would be unifying, one should ask what is their definition of unity.

Promising to bring America back (from what most informed people probably have no idea what is he talking about,) declaring an emergency on the Southern Border where illegal crossings are lower than in his first term, repression against the LGBTQ Community, a cancellation of the Biden/Harris Clean Energy Programs, a return to Law and Order (I laughed at that one,) the planting of the United States flag on Mars (that actually would be impressive,) and a goal to take the Panama Canal back, Trump gave all his supporters something to salivate on.

He also took a trip down memory lane recounting his political comeback, overstating (of course) the magnitude of his November victory. He also said no President has faced crises like he has. Guess he missed those episodes in history like the Civil War, World Wars One and Two, and 9/11. Trump has come into power twice with America calm and on the rise, not in decline.

Outside of a few sentences here and there on American drive, opportunism, and accomplishing the impossible (Biden, Obama, or Clinton could have said that,) there was nothing remotely unifying in the address.

At least he did not mention Hannibal Lecter or whether it is better to face a shark or drown in an electrically charged boat.

This was nothing but a refined stump speech that was long on lies, short on accuracy, and reminiscent of a Chief Executive from America’s Imperial-Manifest Destiny Period.

Even the religious figures who gave the invocations and benedictions before and after Mr. Trump’s address were nauseously partisan.

It is going to be a long four years.

The only bright side to today is if Mr. Trump, with his two impeachments and 34 convictions, can make a comeback, so can the Democrats if they know what they are doing.

1,461 days to go.

  1. This post spared me the grief and frustration of watching the whole thing live and in vivid color. Thanks for the recap.
