The MAGA movement, which has wholly taken over the Republican Party with Trump as their warlord, detests all immigrants. They are demonstrating that hatred every day on the streets of America. They perjoratively call children born in the United States to undocumented immigrants ‘anchor babies’.
They hate the Americanjus soli tradition, inherited from Great Britian when we were a colony, and soon after constitutionalized and codified in centuries of our precedents, practice, and laws. MAGA has tried to reverse those hundreds of years of American tradition, law, and precedent with The Birthright Citizenship Act of 2025. Trump himself tried to arrogate the power to eliminate the birthright via an executive order, which is completely full of hot air and wholly without force or merit, of course.
On January 24th, GOP party officials elected a new Chairman of the AZGOP, and after manipulating (i.e. possibly violating) their own bylaws, they selected Sergio Arellano to be their leader – who happens to be exactly what they would call an ‘anchor baby’.
Personally, I see a gentleman born of undocumented parents present illegally in the United States in 1983 when Sergio was born. They were later granted amnesty by President Reagan in 1986, in one of the best decisions of his otherwise quite putrid presidency. Sergio later entered the American armed forces in gratitude for that amnesty, and went on to successful careers in the military and politics. I believe Sergio is an example of the power and majesty of the American Dream, and an example of how immigrants enrich and improve America.
But I cannot but note the irony and hypocrisy of a political party that now detests and disowns Reagan’s amnesty, and now seeks to remove from our national family people exactly like Chairman Arellano and his parents. I don’t fully understand how Chairman Arellano (or those who voted to make him Chair) deals with the cognitive dissonance that he must endure by leading a party whose dominant America First ideology condemns the entire course and cirumstance of his own life.
I sure would be interested in hearing from Chairman Arellano how he squares that particular circle.
I guess, in the meantime, we can only conclude that – like most things the GOP condemns and attacks in others – it’s actually OKIYAAR!
