CIA Director Leon Panetta said earlier today that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak may announce his resignation in a speech today. Every major news organization in the world was reporting today that Mubarak would step down. The crowds in Tahrir Square were in a celebratory mood.
Mubarak just gave his speech. Oops! Blown call – Mubarak is not leaving, he will remain as president until September but will "transfer authority" to his new vice president. Huh? He vowed to oversee the transfer of power until September.
The crowds in Tahrir Square erupted in anger feeling betrayed, shouting "down, down Mubarak" and "Mubarak go!" Things just got ugly.
There is a major protest and national strike for Friday in Egypt, just a few hours from now. They are threatening to march to the presidential palace on Friday.
The Egyptian military is going to have to make a decision soon — Mubarak, or the Egyptian people?
