AP Wire as well as informal sources report that a budget deal has been struck between the Governor and the Legislature: the legislatures brutal program cuts in exchange for a November ballot on a 1 cent sales tax boost. Yay.
There will be much more to say about this subject, but let me just say this now: total disaster. The tax won't pass – and it shouldn't. Responding to a crisis brought on by over-reliance on a narrowly-based, regressive, and highly volatile funding source by increasing reliance on that very funding source is deeply stupid. Republicans continue to demonstrate that, while they can win elections with their bunkum and atavism, they are unable to govern responsibly.
