By Blocking the Creation of the Bipartisan January 6, 2021 Commission, the Republican Party Betrayed the American People Again

The Republican Party betrayed the American People again today (May 28, 2021.)

Enough of them were able to block the creation of the bipartisan commission that would have been charged with investigating the January 6, 2021, Domestic Terrorist Act on the Nations Capitol.

That this commission was created after Republicans and Democrats in the House agreed to its composition and goals did not matter to Enemy of the People Mitch McConnell and his cowardly lackeys.

That Maine Senator Susan Collins was able to extract an equal staffing provision and a commitment by Speaker Nancy Pelosi to finish the commission’s report by the end of 2021 did not sway the Senate Prince of Darkness and his Trump Zone colleagues.

That the mother and girlfriend of Brian Sicknick along with several members of the Capitol Police called for the formation of this commission did not convince the Senate Obstructionist in Chief and his fellow know-nothing reactionaries.

That Republicans willingly spent millions on the Benghazi hearing when less was at stake for American interests and Hillary Clinton did nothing wrong did not shame them to vote for the commission.

Democrats like Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin hopefully have had a significant emotional event with the revelation that, with ten Republicans (special thanks to the six that did) not crossing into the realm of decency and reality to vote for the commission, filibuster reform is vital to preserving the American Republic and Democratic ideal because the former party of Lincoln has demonstrated again it will betray the American People again and again.

The Republicans betrayed the American People when:

  • They enabled the Trump Big Lie that the election was stolen and did not convince the people otherwise. In the past, they convinced enough Americans that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and was somehow involved in 9/11.
  • Some undoubtedly went against law enforcement in helping plan the January 6, 2021 insurrection.
  • They worked across the states to suppress your right to vote.
  • They voted against vital aid at the ending stages of the Coronavirus. In the past, they have voted against expanding health care and other social justice programs.
  • They crafted budgets in states like Arizona that have potentially left out the most vulnerable, defunded the police, and shortchanged schools all so the rich can get more tax cuts they do not need.
  • They spread climate change denialism and a more sanitized version of American History.

The Republican Party is the Party of Betrayal to the American People.

Democrats need to work to ensure that no one forgets what the Republicans who voted to block the January 6, 2021, Commission did today.

Democrats need to create their own Benghazi-type hearing on the events of January 6, 2021.

Let us see Kevin McCarthy, Mo Brooks, Paul Gosar, Andy Biggs, and Donald Trump testify for close to twelve hours like Hillary Clinton did.

The second coming will probably happen before that occurs.

Democrats need to drive home to the American People that the Republican Party betrayed them and the nation and will do so again without a second thought when given a chance.

The 2022 Midterm Elections will be about the Battle for Democracy and the American Ideal.

The People need to turn out like never before and vote these traitorous betrayers of the American Dream out.

  1. “Sinema is a cosponsor of S.1, the For The People Act, which is meaningless so long as she continues to support the Senate filibuster rule.”

Sinema must think we’re dumb as rocks, like we can’t figure that out.

Well, I’ve said this before but I see Sinema as nothing more than a self-absorbed, unprincipled attention seeker. For awhile, she’s absolutely loving all the attention she is getting by standing in the way of the Democratic agenda. But at some point, Sinema will have to face that the consequences of what she is doing are a serious threat to democracy, and everyone knows it. The only question is will she change course before she does permanent damage or will she stay with her script as is?

Not showing up for an important vote is inexcusable unless she had a ruptured brain aneurysm.

I keep thinking, somewhere out there Martha McSally is laughing her a$$ off.

  2. Roll call vote on cloture motion, https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=117&session=1&vote=00218

Shockingly, 11 senators did not bother to vote: 9 Republicans and 2 Democrats, including Patty Murray (WA) and our own Kyrsten Sinema. Any combination of 6 of the 11 could have broken the filibuster.

Patty Murray previously would not commit to ending the filibuster, but did come around to creating a voting rights exception to the Senate filibuster rule. “Sen. Patty Murray backs creating exemption to filibuster rule to pass Democrats’ sweeping voting reform package”, https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2021/mar/26/sen-patty-murray-backs-overturning-filibuster-to-p/

Kyrsten Sinema has not indicated a willingness to create any exception to the Senate filibuster rule. Her failure to vote today was purely chickenshit, allowing Republicans to filibuster the January 6 Commission without her having to take a stand on the record. That is cowardly calculation.

Sinema is a cosponsor of S.1, the For The People Act, which is meaningless so long as she continues to support the Senate filibuster rule.

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Friday he is planning to force a vote next month on the For the People Act, also known as S. 1 and H.R. 1, bringing it to the floor in the last week of the June work period, setting the stage for a high-stakes clash over the filibuster. “Schumer to force vote on sweeping election overhaul next month”, https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/555977-schumer-to-force-vote-on-sweeping-election-overhaul-next-month

“In the last week of the June work period, the Senate will vote on S.1, the For the People Act, legislation that is essential to defending our democracy, reducing the influence of dark money and powerful special interests, and stopping the wave of Republican voter suppression happening in the states across the country in service of President Trump’s Big Lie,” Schumer wrote.

Schumer told reporters it would come up the week of June 21. The June work period runs through June 25.

The bill is a top priority for Democrats, who have characterized it as necessary to bolster democracy as GOP state legislators across the country propose new voting restrictions in the wake of the 2020 presidential election, which former President Trump has falsely claimed was stolen from him.

    • Kyrsten Sinema is on the clock. Demonstrating that her mystical powers of persuasion over Republicans is nonexistent after failing to deliver 10 Republican votes today for the January 6 Commission – let alone deliver her own vote – she has a little less than a month to come to her senses and to vote to reform or eliminate the filibuster rule in order to pass the For the People Act, also known as S. 1 and H.R. 1.

And Sinema needs to bring along the man to whom she has so foolishly tied her fortunes, Sen. Joe Manchin, who also demonstrated that his mystical powers of persuasion over Republicans is nonexistent after failing to deliver 10 Republican votes today. Maybe Sinema’s alleged mystical powers of persuasion can deliver just her fellow filibuster rule buddy, and save American democracy in the end.

You just know that she would love to be portrayed as a Marvel Comics super hero. Sinema should keep in mind that she can just as easily be portrayed as a villain, if she fails to do the right thing.

  3. Kyrsten Sinema was not there to vote on the most important vote of her lifetime.

I’ve only voted for her one, and that was in the last election to make sure Dems got a majority, I usually just leave her name unlinked on the ballot.

But between this and her self serving stand on the filibuster, I will never vote for her again.

She only cares about herself, and I don’t think I can take another of her canned answers.

    Beyond useless.
