Candidate Announcement Update: Wenona Benally Baldenegro to run in CD 1

Wenona Benally Baldenegro is no longer exploring a run but will run for Congress in CD 1, setting up a Democratic primary with former Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick who has also announced she is running for her old seat in CD 1.

Here is the announcement from the Wenona Benally Baldenegro campaign:

Dear family, friends, and colleagues:
 
I’m writing to inform you that I have decided to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in Arizona’s 1st Congressional district as a Democratic candidate. This district is larger than the states of Illinois and Pennsylvania and is home to the largest number of American Indians than any other congressional district in the country. 
 
I made the decision to run because the time has come for me to come home and do what I can to help make a difference in the lives of all the hard-working people in our communities. I’ve spent the last ten years helping people overcome the everyday struggles they face and I know that I can do the same for the people living in this district. 
 
I also made the decision to run because our people have an opportunity to achieve a historic milestone.  Arizona has never had an American Indian represent the state in Congress and Indian County has never had an American Indian woman serve in Congress.  I hope to be the first to achieve these goals.  But I cannot do this alone; I need your help.
 
I’m reaching out to all my family, friends, and colleagues who have assisted me over the years in reaching my goals and dreams.  I would not be where I am today if it were not for the tremendous amount of love, support, and encouragement that you have all provided me over the years.  Many of you have been with me from the first day I set out from Kayenta to make my way out into the world. Many more of you joined me along the way.  Today, I ask all of you to join me once again in helping me reach this new milestone in my life and the lives of our people.
