Did the Septuagenarian Ninja Turtle, Senator Mitch McConnell, disclose collusion between Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court?

mitch_mcconnell_frown-cropped-proto-custom_2The Septuagenarian Ninja Turtle, Senator Mitch McConnell, in a moment of rare candor, may have disclosed political collusion between the Felonious Five conservative activist justices of the U.S. Supreme Court and the Tea-Publican leaders of Congress.

Greg Sargent of the Washington Post writes, Mitch McConnell: We can’t repeal Obamacare, but Supreme Court may ‘take it down’ instead:

[The] link between the lawsuit and the goal of taking down the law has been drawn tightly by none other than the incoming GOP Senate Majority Leader.

In a very candid moment, Mitch McConnell flatly describes this legal challenge as a substitute means through which an end — repeal — will be accomplished that Republicans failed to accomplish through the political and legislative process.

Republican senator signals the return of SB1062 under, you guessed it, the banner of Hobby Lobby

hl 1062

On Monday the AZ Republic featured a pair of op-eds from a Republican State Senator and the outgoing Democratic House Minority Leader about the prospect of a reformulated SB1062 in the upcoming Arizona legislative session.

Here’s Senator Nancy Barto (R) explaining why opponents of discrimination are misguided meaniebutts:

To start — the vast majority of the attacks against this simple bill were at best misunderstandings of the legislation, or at worst outright lies with the endgame of conditioning the public into automatically equating faith with bigotry — in the name of equality and fairness.

On the contrary, SB 1062 brought Arizona in line with federal law and would not have created any “new right” to discriminate (i.e. refusing people taxi, hotel or restaurant service).

The Supreme Court made this clear in June when they said the Green family, who own Hobby Lobby, couldn’t be forced to pay for abortion-causing drugs in their insurance plans as “Obamacare” mandated — meaning they didn’t have to surrender their First Amendment rights simply because they started a business.

This is exactly what SB 1062 would have clarified in Arizona.

IOKIYAR: President Willard ‘Mittens’ Romney’s executive orders

The high priest of Beltway centrism, political scientist Norm Ornstein, writing at The Atlantic takes another look at those executive orders that President Willard “Mittens” Romney promised he would sign on “Day One in office” — that thankfully never came to pass for this pretentious Plutocrat. Mitt Romney’s Executive Actions That Never Were:

[M]y exchange with [Stuart Stevens, Mitt Romney’s campaign manager] prompted me to remember a central pledge from the Romney campaign in 2012—effectively to blow up Obamacare through executive action. Here, in the words of Lanhee Chen, Romney’s domestic-policy guru, is what Romney would have done from his first day in office, without trying to compromise with or negotiate with Congress:

romney say anythingA Democratic Senate would probably have blocked efforts to repeal Obamacare, leaving Romney to halt or reverse the law through executive action. As promised, he would have found a way to issue waivers from Obamacare to states so that they could pursue their own health-care reforms.

But at the end of the day, Obamacare would still be the law, partisan gridlock would still cast its shadow over the policy-making process, and President Romney’s executive actions would be the source of myriad legal challenges from the law’s supporters.

Let’s consider each of these actions separately. First, thwarted by the Democratic-controlled Senate, Romney would have issued an executive order suspending the establishment of the Obamacare exchanges, freezing funding for implementation of the law and creating broad exemptions from the individual mandate.

He also would have suspended or rewritten any regulations issued by the Obama administration that had the potential to increase health insurance costs, displace patients from their existing health insurance coverage, or restrict choices for consumers.

GOP files frivolous lawsuit over ACA

ObamacareThe farce that is the modern-day Tea-Publican Party just keeps making the tragicomedy of our political system even worse.

Steve Benen writes, House Republicans finally file anti-Obama lawsuit:

It took them long enough. Four months after announcing their intention to sue President Obama, House Republicans finally followed through.

* * *

Jane C. Timm reported:

House Republicans on Friday filed a long-anticipated lawsuit against the White House, alleging the Obama administration abused its power by making unilateral changes to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

The lawsuit comes just hours after President Obama enacted sweeping changes to the immigration system, enraging conservative lawmakers and setting the stage for an all-out war between the Republican Party and the president over the limits of his executive authority. The legal action threatens not only the president’s healthcare overhaul, but could change the power of executive authority forever.

How we got to this point continues to be a story unto itself. As we talked about last week, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) first announced his plan to sue the president back in June. A month later, the Speaker’s office formally unveiled the legislation to authorize the litigation. A month after that, House Republicans agreed to pay a D.C. law firm $500 an hour, in taxpayer money, to handle the case.

To no one’s surprise, Gov-elect Ducey’s Budget Study Committee is a bunch of rich white people

Crossposted from DemocraticDiva.com

Arizona’s soon-to-be Governor, Doug Ducey, has assembled a team to advise him on the budget.

PHOENIX (November 17) – Governor-elect Doug Ducey announced today the formation of a Budget Study Committee, led by a team of public and private sector professionals charged with studying the budget and providing expertise and feedback to the governor-elect.

Throughout his campaign for governor, Ducey made clear he intended to go through the budget line by line in order to ensure Arizona lives within its means and invests in priorities for the state with a focus on economic growth and education.

“Before we can address the challenges facing our state, we need to do our homework,” Ducey said. “This team of professionals will provide a diverse set of perspectives on our state finances. It’s important to me to hear from those who have dealt intimately with the state budget, in addition to receiving an outside perspective from the private sector, so we can adopt mechanisms to be more effective, accountable and efficient with our resources. I look forward to working with them to get our arms wrapped around the budget and examine the best ways to balance it while also growing our economy and ensuring there is money in classrooms to help teachers teach and students learn.”
