Arizona Governor Doug Ducey does not really believe there is a crisis on the southern border.
How can a statement be made given his grandstanding photo op with Florida Senator Rick Scott by one of the few segments of completed border wall last week?
In a social media post from March 26, 2021, Governor Ducey wrote:
“We need to resolve the issues at the border before they get even worse, and Arizona is ready to partner with the federal government to strengthen our borders and improve our immigration system. I spoke to Secretary Mayorkas this morning about our concerns and solutions.
Our sheriffs need help. Our mayors need help. Border patrol needs help. And we have a real opportunity to partner to ensure additional boots on the ground are available to manage this crisis.
In Arizona, we’ve previously deployed the National Guard to the border to support law enforcement. I’ve requested federal reimbursement for deployment, so we can do it again and get this crisis under control.”
While the Governor is right that solving the current border surge requires a partnership between the state and federal governments, that last line in Mr. Ducey’s statement demonstrates that the cheapo-schnorrer Grand Canyon State Chief Executive does not think the border crisis is really a crisis.
If Mr. Ducey really felt the southern border was being overrun by unarmed unaccompanied migrant children, he would deploy the Arizona National Guard without hesitation and pay the bill himself from state coffers like Pima County is doing with FEMA for two new COVID 19 vaccination sites.
He could take it out of his proposed tax cuts for the rich and Arizona businesses if he is so concerned about security.
The Mayors, Sheriffs, and Border Patrol agents cited in Governor Ducey’s post probably would vote for that option.
This is another recent example, as the removal of COVID safety measures, of Governor Ducey playing to the reactionary crowd to further his higher office ambitions.
Except, in this case, he does not want to pay for it.
Put your money where your mouth is Mr. Governor.
