Cherny Campaign Announces Record Breaking Fundraising Total

State Treasurer Campaign Demonstrates Grassroots Strength and Resonance of Message of Turning Arizona’s Economy Around

PHOENIX – Former Arizona Assistant Attorney General and economic policy expert Andrei Cherny today announced that his campaign for State Treasurer has raised over $350,000 – more than three times as much as any previous downballot statewide candidate in Arizona history has reported at this point in their campaign and more than two and a half times as much as any previous State Treasurer candidate has spent on their campaign in total.

“I’ve been overwhelmed at the way our message of investing in Arizona and reforming state government has been resonating all over the state,” Cherny said. “I’m especially proud of the fact that the great majority of our contributors gave $100 or less.  We are doing what we set out to do: build a grassroots movement for change to turn our economy around.”

Cherny’s fundraising total is the capstone of months of campaigning all across Arizona:
  • Cherny has spoken to over 200 Chambers of Commerce, Rotary Clubs, Kiwanis Clubs, senior centers, house parties, and other community meetings during his campaign thus far.
  • In campaigning through 59 cities and towns across Arizona, Cherny has driven over 25,000 miles – more than the circumference of the Earth.
To put the Cherny for State Treasurer campaign’s fundraising totals in perspective, the previous record for fundraising by the January 31st report for a downballot statewide race was posted by Janet Napolitano in her 1998 race for Attorney General – she reported $109,000 raised.  The most ever spent on a State Treasurer race was by Rano Singh in 2006 – she received $133,000 from Clean Elections.  In 2006, Dean Martin raised $29,000 for his State Treasurer’s race (augmenting that with a $44,000 transfer from his Senate committee and $14,000 in checks to his own campaign.)
NB: Andrei Cherny will be the guest speaker at Saguaro Eastside Democrats on Monday, January 18, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. SED meets at the New Spirit Lutheran Church, 8701 E. Old Spanish Trail (northeast corner at Camino Seco). All meeting of SED are open to the general public. For further information please call (520) 850-6755.
