From the Arizona Republic's AC/DC Blog Cindy McCain endorses same-sex marriage campaign:
As if Sen. John McCain didn't have enough problems with the right wing of his party . . .
Cindy McCain, the wife of the Arizona Republican and 2008 presidential nominee, contacted the NOH8 Campaign and asked to pose for a photo supporting same-sex marriage. The NOH8 Campaign is a photo project protesting California's 2008 passage of Proposition 8, a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
"Aligning yourself with the platform of gay marriage as a Republican still tends to be very stigmatic, but Cindy McCain wanted to participate in the campaign to show people that party doesn't matter — marriage equality isn't a Republican issue any more than it is a Democratic issue," the NOH8 Web site says. "It's about human rights, and everybody being treated equally in the eyes of the law that runs and protects this country."
The McCains' outspoken daughter, Meghan McCain, has long backed the marriage-equality movement, but the four-term senator supports the traditional view that marriage should be between a man and a woman.
"It makes for spirited conversation," John McCain said in a telephone interview.
[John McCain's office issued a statement saying he respects the views of members of his family but remains opposed to gay marriage. It says McCain believes "marriage is only defined as between one man and one woman." The first Mrs. McCain was unavailable for comment.]
McCain is running for re-election in a contested 2010 Republican primary. McCain critic J.D. Hayworth, a former congressman who is considering running against McCain, on Wednesday picked up the Cindy McCain photo as a topic of discussion on his afternoon radio show on Phoenix station KFYI.
NB: Let's make this senate race more interesting: maybe the more socially progressive Cindy McCain should run for senate instead of the angry old dinosaur, Senator McNasty.
