Local politics gained an inspirational jolt of productive energy during an enthusiastically received town hall in Tucson on Saturday, June 21st. A respectful, vibrantly engaged audience modeled strong civic unity in a widely diverse gathering of highly motivated constituents who share in the disappointment of Congressman Juan Ciscomani’s ongoing refusal to meet with the people he claims to care about but continues to ignore.

The event was organized by the recently formed Tucson Citizen Organizers (TCO) group, inspired to action by the potential damage of the Trump administration’s “One Big UGLY Bill Act” (BUBA).  Speakers included Pima County Supervisor Rex Scott, state Sen. Priya Sundareshan and state Rep. Nancy Gutierrez, as well as congressional candidates JoAnna Mendoza and Deja Foxx, as well as Veteran and Union representatives.

Topics included the terrible damage the BBB will inflict on:

Medicaid  —  SNAP  —  Veterans  —  Education  —  Protections from AI Harms

Access to Healthcare facilities for ALL Arizonans  —  Public Lands  —  Judicial Independence

Our Democracy.

As guests arrived, a presentation on these impacts played on two large screens. The “Budget Bill Facts and Info” presentation can be found here, and contains links to source data and articles for further reading.

Numerous questions and comments directed to Rep. Ciscomani were submitted, with an overall theme of urging the congressman to vote NO on the destructive and deficit-ballooning BUBA. These were hand delivered to Rep. Ciscomani’s office on June 26th, where staffers promised that every constituent would receive a response. While many items have been struck from the bill by the Senate Parliamentarian, Rep. Ciscomani was asked to address each item assuming it would be resurrected in future versions of the bill or other legislation. TCO further requested a meeting with the congressman and were assured that his scheduler would be in touch.

The townhall was filled to an overflow capacity of nearly 300 people and provided overwhelming evidence of the large number of constituents wishing for reasonable contact with the man who claims to represent their interests. Livestream of the event was provided courtesy of Working Families Party and can be found on their Facebook page.
