“Coach Steve” makes the news

by David Safier

L321824-2 Friend of the blog Steve Gall got some well deserved ink in Friday's Star. He's a fanatic, in a good sense, about exercise and physical fitness.

Steve volunteers at Dunham Elementary School leading recess activities for students. Here are some prime comments from the article.

Organized recess is Gall's way of keeping kids physically active while teaching them about teamwork and sportsmanship. . . . They are required to take part in exercises, sports and games for 30 minutes.

Judging from the way students burst out onto the playground in full sprint, it is clear that they enjoy their time with Gall — or as they call him, "Coach Steve."

Dunham Principal Helen Grijalva added that on days that Gall is scheduled to visit, student attendance is nearly at 100 percent.

Nearly 100% attendance. Kids sprinting out to take part. Good sportsman[and woman]ship encouraged. Good stuff.

Steve will be featured in a cable access piece in January (if Steve reminds me, I'll keep you posted), and he's working once again on a bill to make recess mandatory.
