Debate! Debate! Debate!

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

I see that the League of Women Voters has scheduled some candidate debates, and the Pima Council on Aging has scheduled some candidate forums.

There are the Clean Elections debates required for the few Clean Elections candidates that we have, and I am sure that Arizona Public Media (PBS) will schedule their lame "conversations" with the candidates in their TV studios.

But when is the corporate media, who is rolling in campaign cash in this Citizens United era, going to get together and sponsor a series of public debates between the candidates? Spend some of that campaign cash on venues for public debates. What's wrong with our TV news teams and newspapers of record, like the Arizona Republic and the Arizona Daily Star? Where is their civic responsiblity to host a series of public debates for the candidates? Carmona vs. Flake, The congressional candidates, etc.

The media does this in other states, but it does not seem to occur here in Arizona. They do know that ballots go out in the mail on October 11, don't they? Tick-tock.

  1. AZBlueMeanie, just wanted to let you know that today the Secretary of State will announce the results of the recount in the race for the Democratic nomination for Congress in the 4th C.D. Mikel Weisser is a great candidate, but I would like you to look at the website of the other candidate and see if this is a person who really should be supported by the (Arizona and national) Democratic party. As Mikel Weisser tweeted this morning: “Is Johnnie Robinson Alvin Greene?”

How do you think this person would handle himself in a debate with Rep. Paul Gosar?

  2. Why would the Arizona Republic spend money on debates when we all know that unless there is no Republican running for a specific office, they will always endorse the Republican, no matter how extreme?

  3. Most of the influential members of the MSM here are too busy preening about how “both sides are so extreme!” to be of any use to civic dialog.
