Ruben Gallego, the Democratic candidate for US Senate, said he has found “Republican Kryptonite,” speaking at the new Pima County Democratic Party Headquarters on Speedway Blvd. in Tucson.
He was joined by Democrat Kirsten Engel, who is running for Congress in CD6.
“I really encourage everyone to talk about water. Talk about how Democrats know how to protect water,” Gallego said. “And we will start winning back 5% of those rural communities. That’s a big shift statewide. So I’d really recommend, especially if you’re out there talking or if you’re going to run for office, talk about water. That is their kryptonite. That’s the Republican kryptonite. We’re going to be talking a lot about water,” Gallego said.
“Republicans have been in charge now for close to six months. What have they done? Can you point to one more victory or anything?” Gallego said. “I was out in not politically friendly Yuma County, Mojave County and La Paz County. Do you know what they are interested in talking to Democrats about? Water. Out there, those Republicans trust us more with water than they trust their fellow Republicans.”
Arizona is in a water shortage crisis because of water overuse by agriculture and a historic drought, accelerated by a warming climate, which is draining the Colorado River dry. On June 1, 2023, the state of Arizona restricted future home-building in the Phoenix area due to a lack of groundwater based on projections showing that wells will run dry under existing conditions.
Disgraced candidates Kyrsten Sinema and Kari Lake
Gallego dismissed disgraced US Senator Kyrsten Sinema. “She actually has no chance of winning anyway. Every poll has her at only 13-14% in the polls, and that’s her high water mark.
“We are coming through with the largest reinvigoration of our energy markets. The green movement that we’ve been talking about is all happening. It’s all happening because Democrats were in charge in Congress for two years, that’s right. Now give us that again, and without Kirsten Sinema there stopping with a filibuster, and we will turn this country beautiful,” he said
“Our goal is to beat Kari Lake. She’ll be announcing, we think, in early September. Our campaign is going to be about beating her, but not in the dirty ways that she wants. She wants to talk about everything except what Arizona needs. She wants to talk about 2020,” he said.
“We’re going to be talking about 2024, 2028 and beyond. She wants to talk about elections of the past. We want to talk about where we’re going in the future. She wants to talk about hating each other, being afraid of immigrants, being afraid of our LGBT family, our trans friends and family. We’re going to talk about what we’re going to do to make this state more welcoming and accepting in general.”
“And that’s how Democrats win. That’s how we’re going to win in this state. We win when we talk about the future and about solutions, but we lose when we allow them to talk only about division. So, let’s not get wrapped up into just fighting on their terms. Let’s not get wrapped up in trying to spite Sinema by winning this.”

Kirsten Engel
Kirsten Engel, Democratic candidate for US House in CD6, announced that she had been endorsed by US Senator Mark Kelly and Emily’s List. She found Republican kryptonite in GOP opposition to women’s abortion rights. She blasted incumbent MAGA Rep. Juan Ciscomani:
“People are waking up, and they see what a critical district this is to win. And they know that the person who is in office right now is not representing our values. He has already voted at least twice against women. He is hiding. Just like he’s run away from the press, he’s running away from the public because he doesn’t want them to know that he’s extreme on abortion,” Engel said.
“He doesn’t care. He’s willing to reduce our rights. Not just reduce, take them away. And what he signed was a bill to undercut medication abortion.”

“You can see a lot of LD 17 from that lookout, right? And I thought about all those homes and all of those families that were settling in for the evening, just spending time with their families or winding down from a day of work. And I thought we get so caught up in what divides us that we forget that all of our homes probably look exactly the same at the end of the evening.
“So, as I’m kicking off this campaign and getting ready to knock on doors, I really want to lean into those common-sense values that unite all of us. We know what freedom really looks like. It’s freedom for our small businesses to prosper, our prosperous housing, and the right to bodily autonomy, which is a key point for me. We know that freedom looks like the ability to be educated in strong public schools. I hope that we can all reflect on what that freedom really looks like.”
