Out of State Billionaires Trying to Buy Off Latinos, Other Arizonans
Washington Special Interests Parachute into Arizona to Deceive Voters about Ann Kirkpatrick and Ron Barber’s Records
For Immediate Release: April 3, 2014
Phoenix, AZ–National Republicans are testing the bounds of absurdity in their futile attempts to mislead Arizona voters about Ann Kirkpatrick and Ron Barber’s records. The LIBRE Initiative, a special interest group based in D.C. that’s funded by the Koch brothers, is bombarding Arizona airwaves with hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of Martha McSally, Andy Tobin, Gary Kiehne, and Adam Kwasman’s campaigns and to deceive Arizona voters. Hardly a stranger to polluting Arizona voters’ airwaves, the LIBRE Initiative is part of a shadowy network of organizations largely funded by Charles and David Koch, and received nearly $3.8 million from other Koch-funded trusts. The Koch Brothers that have already spent millions across the country trying to buy a Congress that supports their reckless agenda, including the Ryan Budget plan.

“The LIBRE Initiative is a fake Latino advocacy organization whose real mission is to shamefully shill for the misguided agenda of billionaire brothers, Charles and David Koch. The Koch-backed budget plan would be a disaster for Arizona seniors, forcing them to pay more for health care in order to provide tax giveaways for billionaires,” said DJ Quinlan, executive director of the Arizona Democratic Party. “So it’s no surprise that these out of state billionaires are flooding the airwaves to prop up Republican candidates here, masking their support for a budget that would end Medicare as we know it. Arizona Seniors deserve representatives that put them first, not people who have been bought and paid for by the Koch brothers and are beholden to special interests.”

BACKGROUND:Koch-Backed LIBRE Initiative Promoted Deficit-Reduction Strategies in FY2015 Republican Budget. In April 2014, the Koch-backed Libre Initiative issued a press release tacitly supporting the FY2015 Republican Budget and promoting its deficit-reduction strategies. Daniel Garza, Executive Director of the LIBRE Initiative, further praised the Republican budget, stating, “This is one case where the House is leading[.]” [LIBRE Initiative press release, 4/01/14]
Republican Budget Proposal Would Turn Medicare into a “Voucher-Style Program.” “Ryan’s plan recycles several proposals from previous years that remain popular with GOP lawmakers, including repealing the benefits of the Affordable Care Act. But he keeps the taxes and cuts to Medicare mandated by the law. He calls for privatizing Medicare by changing it from an entitlement program into a voucher-style program.” [Washington Post, 4/01/14]
Republican Budget Proposal Would Repeal the Affordable Care Act, Costing Seniors $1,200. In 2014 The Hill reported: “Rep. Paul Ryan’s final House budget includes a full repeal of ObamaCare.” In 2013 The Hill reported: “7.3 million people who reached the “doughnut hole” in their Medicare prescription drug coverage have saved $8.9 billion on their prescription drugs since the law was enacted in 2010. That’s an average savings of $1,209 per person.” [The Hill, 4/01/14, 11/26/13]
