To begin, I will confess to my shame that I have a talent for cursing. I grew up around Navy and Marine veterans who are legendary for their "salty" language. I am able to string together a series of expletives and epithets in complete sentences and paragraphs. It is a talent for which I am ashamed, and forever asking God for his forgiveness and strength.
There are some words that are so offensive, degrading and insulting that not even an old pro like me would allow himself to even think, let alone ever speak. I have my standards.
That is why even I was stunned when I read what John McCain purportedly said to his wife in 1992, in the new book by Cliff Schecter (on stands now) The Real McCain.
In an excerpt exclusively reported by RAW STORY several weeks ago The Raw Story | Book: McCain temper boiled over in ’92 tirade, called wife a ‘cunt’ :
"Three reporters from Arizona, on the condition of anonymity, also let me in on another incident involving McCain’s intemperateness. In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain’s hair and said, "You’re getting a little thin up there." McCain’s face reddened, and he responded, "At least I don’t plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt." McCain’s excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days."
"Members of the media are squeamish covering stuff like this so they let it go," Schecter told RAW STORY. "Back in ’92, when people use naughty words, [reporters] don’t know as much what to do with it."
Only the "three reporters form Arizona" who told this story to Schecter on the condition of anonymity and the other individuals reportedly present know whether the story is true. It is certainly not out of character for John McCain to use vulgar language, to which many people can attest, so it is within the realm of possibility and has the air of believability.
I have no respect for a man who would speak to any woman using such offensive, degrading and insulting language, let alone to his own wife in public for the purpose of humiliating her in front of "the boys." I can’t imagine that this is something that women voters will not find offensive.
Jon Stewart of The Daily Show finally caught up to this story last Wednesday. "It turns out that one of the gentlemen running for president has been accused of dropping the c-bomb," Jon Stewart said.
Jon Stewart also noted New York Times columnist David Brooks (who is an informal adviser to the McCain campaign) asserted that Barack Obama is an "elitist" because he does not think Obama eats at "the salad bar at Applebee’s." As Jon Stewart points out, there is no salad bar at Applebee’s. Clearly, the snooty David Brooks knows not of what he speaks – per usual.
