Drinking Liberally will be happening this Thursday starting at 6pm at the Shanty on 4th Avenue at the underpass. This week we will either be on the patio or inside the bar, depending on whether it’s just cold out or damn cold out. Dress warmly, but wear layers, is my advice.
As with last week, we are experimenting with potluck this week, so you are encouraged to bring finger foods which don’t require any utensils to eat. Thanks to those members who stepped up and delivered mucho yummy comestibles last week.
This week, our special guest is Jeremy Palmer, a PhD candidate from the UA’s Near Eastern Studies speakers’ bureau. Jeremy is an Arabic language expert. Jeremy is going to share with us his experiences in the Middle East, especially Syria and Jordan.
Reading Liberally was postponed to December 13th for the DFA Tucson Iraq War forum, so you have an extra week to sink your teeth into Rifkin’s ‘One Percent Doctrine’. For details see my earlier post regarding the postponement.

Does anyone know why Giffords is NOT listed on the http://www.fec.gov web-site filing as required as I have done since April of 2004?
I have logged on trying to see her expenditures for the last couple of weeks and find Francines name and mine along with every other CD8 Candidate but the Little Liar Giffords??
AZW88;
The Union President in the 1960’sthat comes to my mind of the AFL-CIO local 727 ,now known as Local 99 of the UFCWU was “Kirtpatrick.” You might ask your dad about him and the time he accepted a Union vote to Strike and ignored it; signed the contract with Lucky Food Stores, Food Giant Stores, and Safeway then eloped with the Union Secretary and moved to Colorado with ALL THE UNIONS MONEY after withdrawing it from bank accounts!
AzW88;
the list of people to ask about my envolvement is too long to list; but if you see Gene Karp; Dennis DeConcini;Steve Emerine;Pat Poore;Juana Mase;Janet Napolitano;Sheriff Clarence Dupnik; and the current secretary of the UFCWU Paul Rubin who was active in the Union back into the 1960s as I have been ask him.
As to the Sheriffs Department, as alot were indited and retired since then. Look at the Tucson Daily Citizen and Star Archives and my face is all over the place on the FRONT PAGE under the HEADLINES!
As for Jimmy Carter we are very very GOOD friends as my home was one of those cleared for him to stay overnight when he was President. Today he still sends me Christmas Cards as Iam a FOUNDER of The Carter Center.
One thing to keep in mind, major players in Tucson do not get there pictures on front pages and don’t want them there! As my family were the “City Fathers” of the City of Tucson and Pima County we met in secret on the mens floor of The old Pueblo Club to vote on what the city council should vote up or down. This was well known only to a select group of people at the time, so you will not have a general knowledge of what went on there.
Alot of the major players of that time have died in Arizona and nationally.
As for the Union not knowing who Iam you must be kidding??? Iam pensioned by that very Union and have spoken many times to all the learders of there support for NON-UNION Candidates and the Legal Support of Union UFCWU Lawyers who are now defending the Illegal Workers who took American Social Security Numbers to work at the Swift Meat packing plant! Iam holding them accountable to the rank and file as we vote for new leadership in the future!
You make it sound like Carter did nothing for the hostages…. WRONG WRONG WRONG.
HE approved the rescue mission.. yes it failed, mostly due to piss-poor military planning. HIS administration worked with the Canada and their embassy in Iran to sneak a number of Americans out of Iran.
Had we truly understood what was happening in the Middle East over the past 60 years would have saved MILLIONS of lives in Israel/Palestine, Iraq, Iran, etc. But because leaders have NOT take the time to understand the history, culture, and group dnamics of the region, we are now in a serious mess.
I don’t trust the president or ANY ONE in the central administration of Iran. But then I don’t trust the dumb-fucks that are in OUR central administration EITHER.
Dwight, you like to paint yourself as this great leader in our community, but my dad does not recall your name at all…. Funny, because he was active in the Retail Clerks union from the mid-60’s on AND his step father was a Deputy Sherrif her in Pima County..
Francine;trying to paint me anti-semetic will not hold water in Tucson Arizona; it might where you come from!
Having been in Iran in the 1970’s before the fall of the Shaw as a guest of the Commander of The Air Force Base, being taken by bodyguard to many places for dinner and site seeing;and seeing and hearing what Jimmy Carter did to the people by sitting in the White House with a sweater on letting the hostages sit there was NOT for a “LACK OF TRYING TO TALK TO THEM AND UNDERSTAND WHY THEY WANT TO KILL YOU AND ME!
For those of you who think the President of Iran today would not slit your throat at his first chance , gives me reason to doubt the future of this Countries will to defend itself.
There is more to understanding what is happening in a country than ‘correct translation’
You need to understand the areas history, culture, attitudes as well as language. ANd you need to do this beyond what one would find in a texbook! This young man and others like him are doing things the RIGHT way, by actually GOING to the country (ies). You gaina better understanding of not only what the people are saying, but learn what they are NOT saying, why they say or don’t say something. There are a lot of cultural taboos, tribal customs, tribal loyalties, et al that play a critical part in what happens. If you had been there last Thursday, you would have heard a this young man read a letter from a friend of his who is in Iraq. It clearly demostrated how all of these things affect what is happeing.
1- Jane said: “to educate themselves about this region” ; she meant Middle East, not “our” region
2- Please use “their” and “there” properly, I get confused
Dear, dear Dwight:
You refer to a “Jewish Rabbi”. At the risk of stating the obvious, only a Jew could/would be a Rabbi. If you know of any other kind, please share the information with me. Further, I would like to suggest that under George Bush, America has tried walking all over anyone – especially the people of Iraq – with whom they disagreed. Surely it would be better to talk to people rather than fighting with them and killing them.
The paranoia of this President has made the whole world less safe and destroyed any opportunity the United States had to be an honest broker in any conflict. We have wreaked havoc – and innocent people are dying. This is tragic.
Both the FBI and CIA are begging for people like Jeremy and will pay a pretty penny for his service. They are hiring right now! I commend him for his work but remind everyone we are NOT the ones who need educating about what is going on in the Middle East, as it has been written about for thousands of years. We need the language translated CORRECTLY so no more mistakes are made by our Government or Military.
Mike;
I referenced the comment by Jane’s statements about students in general educating themselves about our Region.
I have before me the CIA/FBI file labeled “FAILURES IN REGARD TO TWO OF THE SEPTEMBER 11 HIGJACKERS, THE PHOENIX ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION,AND THE MOUSSAOUI INVESTIGATION: (LABELED “SECRET”)
Today a airport took down Christmas Trees because of a Jewish Rabbi; yesterday Emoms tried to misuse there rights on an airplane putting everyones elses rights LAST and there rights FIRST!
These and other questions should be asked of this PHD Mormon as to why Radical Islam and students of Islam want to kill Americans?
The time is now for these answers before we in Tucson are made an example of; take a look at my web-site at the bottom of the MAIN page you will se a map of the United States showing where Terrorist Cells are operating , one of which IS TUCSON,ARIZONA!!!
Labeling me a “Moron” will not stop the next attack but maybe I can!
Dwight,
Your prejudices are astoundingly obdurate to facts. The guy studies Arabic and suddenly he’s a ‘middle eastern student educating himself on our region’? You imply our guest is terrorist without knowing anything about him? You really are a piece of work. Jeremy happens to be a caucasian American and a Mormon, you moron.
A middle Eastern Student educating himself on our region,I don’t want to sound condecending but it sounds familiar?
I agree with Tasha that Jeremy was really interesting. He’s one of several students from the University’s Near Eastern Studies program I’ve met at Drinking Liberally and I learned something from each of them. I don’t know how many people from Jeremy’s generation are taking the responsibility to educate themselves about this region but I hope there are many who have his depth, compassion, and eloquence. It’s the only way our insane international policies might evolve into something positive for the U.S. and that region.
jeremy was a great guest – he let me know he enjoyed meeting us all and thought we were well informed!
