Rex Scott

“Rex grew up in Athens, Ohio, and has two degrees from Ohio University. He became the first OU student ever elected to Athens City Council when he was 24, was re-elected two years later and resigned near the end of his second term to move to Pima County.

Supervisor Scott and his staff have demonstrated a strong commitment to community service and outreach on behalf of the people of District 1. They have conducted multiple public town halls and meet regularly with homeowner’s associations and other community groups. Anyone who contacts the office for assistance or support can count on their concerns being addressed promptly and with care.

Rex has been married for 30 years to his wife, a fellow career educator. They are the proud parents of adult twins who are starting their own careers.

Jake Martin

A Pima County resident since 7th grade, Jake has always valued community service and worked hard to give back to the community he loves. At the age of 18, Jake founded the Survivor Shield Foundation, one of the first nonprofits in the State of Arizona to provide emergency relief financial aid to survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. In just two years of leading Survivor Shield, he has transformed it into one of the highest rated service providers for victims of sexual assault in Arizona. As a business founder, a job creator, and a social worker, Jake has a plethora of hands-on experience serving our community. A committed advocate for Democratic values, helping those in need, and building a better Pima County, Jake is ready to serve.

Vanessa Bechtol

Vanessa Bechtol’s 20 years of professional experience in public service includes working with nonprofit organizations focused on land use planning, economic growth in the tourism industry, quality of place, and cultural and historic preservation. She served eight years as the Executive Director of the Santa Cruz Valley Heritage Alliance, where she worked with elected officials, community leaders, and nonprofit partners in the shared pursuit of preserving and promoting southern Arizona’s rich heritage. In that role she also co-authored the first nomination for Tucson to be designated as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, the first in the U.S.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Latin American Studies (2000), Master of Science in Planning (2003), and a certificate in Nonprofit Leadership & Management (2021), all from the University of Arizona. Vanessa is a proud graduate of the Greater Tucson Leadership program and the Civic & Political Leadership Academy.”

Carolyn’s note: Two Dems are contending for the District 1 Pima County Supervisor seat in the AZ Primary on July 30, 2024 – incumbent Rex Scott (elected in Nov. 2020) and challenger Jake Martin, a UA student. Running in District 4 without opposition is businesswoman Vanessa Bechtol, to challenge 2 term Republican incumbent Steve Christy in the General election.
