JoAnna Mendoza is a Marine veteran, public servant, and single mother with a lifelong commitment to service. Growing up in a rural farming community in Arizona, she learned the values of hard work and perseverance at an early age, helping her parents in the cotton fields under the scorching sun. Despite her family’s struggles and reliance on safety-net programs, JoAnna was determined to give back. At 17, she joined the Military, beginning a distinguished 20-year career that included serving as a Marine Corps Drill Instructor and deploying to combat zones in Iraq and Afghanistan. After retiring from the military, she faced the challenges of transitioning to civilian life, reinforcing her dedication to supporting veterans and ensuring they receive the care they deserve.

Her passion for public service led her to work as a congressional staffer for former Congressman Tom O’Halleran (AZ-01), where she tackled critical issues like veteran homelessness, ensuring Arizona’s water security, and bipartisan problem-solving. As a single mother, JoAnna understands firsthand the financial strains of child care, health care, and housing. She is deeply committed to advocating for working families and ensuring that government serves as a force for good. Now running for Congress in Arizona’s Sixth Congressional District, JoAnna aims to unite her community, address economic challenges, and fight for the well-being of hardworking Arizonans.”

Carolyn’s note: JoAnna will be challenging Republican incumbent Juan Ciscomani who is serving his 2nd term in CD 6. He defeated Environmental law professor/former LD 10 State Senator Democrat Kirsten Engel twice in Nov. 2022 and 2024.

JoAnna ran against LD 11 State Senator in Nov. 2020, and got 45.6% of the vote compared to his 54.4%. At that time she was a political newcomer, but also a Congressional aide to CD 1 Rep. Tom O’Haleran.
