Protecting the Sonoran Desert
January 11 @ 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm MST
by Carolyn Classen, blogger
Protecting the Sonoran Desert Presented by Kate Hotten Saturday, January 11, 2025, 3 pm Room 203, Continental Shopping Plaza, Green Valley |
“Kate Hotten is the Co-Executive Director of the Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection, where she leads the organization’s large landscape conservation policy and advocacy work. She’s trained as a landscape architect and has recently returned to the US from Ireland, where she worked in peatland conservation and natural capital policy. In a past life, she was an international expert in anti-money laundering but she finds much more enjoyment in advocating for the landscape. |
Kate will speak about the Coalition’s history, including their work on the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan, several current focus areas (working with developers and local planners to preserve open space, fighting against Interstate 11, and advocating for wildlife crossings and ecosystem connectivity), and how you can get involved. Action Opportunity:Prior to the talk, Kate urges attendees to consider taking five minutes to let Pima County’s Regional Transportation Authority know in their survey (https://rtanext.com/survey/) that you demand more regional support for wildlife crossings. In particular, the Coalition is advocating for adequate funding to connect wildlife habitats across the busy I-19 south of Green Valley as well as across the I-10. The RTA are collecting feedback from the public on their next 20-year budget until Wednesday, January 8, 2025—you can read more here: https://www.sonorandesert.org/learning-more/wildlife-linkages/rta-next/. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you want to talk about this, too—thank you!” ***The collection wagon will be available for your contributions of items for Sr. Jose’s Women’s Center*** Sponsored by Green Valley Democrats |
