“Hudbay, a Canadian mining company, has plans to develop a copper mining project consisting of 6 open pits straddling the northern ridge of the Santa Ritas. This project includes plans to dumping mine tailings consisting of toxic waste rock as close as 1 1/2 miles from an elementary school and hundreds of feet from homes.
The time to act is now!”

“Key attendees and speakers include the following (from City of Tucson press release):
- Adelita Grijalva, former Pima County Supervisor (District 5)
- Regina Romero, Mayor of Tucson
- Kevin Dahl, City of Tucson Councilmember (Ward 3)
- Russ McSpadden, Center for Biological Diversity
- Rob Peters, Save the Scenic Santa Ritas
The Copper World project threatens to destroy a treasured landscape, pollute scarce water resources, and set a dangerous precedent for future mining operations in our region. Rally participants will call on local, state, and federal representatives to oppose this project and to take a stand to protect our lands for generations to come.
Event organizers: Save the Scenic Santa Ritas, Center for Biological Diversity, Great Old Broads for the Wilderness, Living Desert Alliance, and the Corona de Tucson Preservation Alliance.”
