“The presentation will address Sino-American relations, with emphasis on three persuasions, present in the Chinese world and the United States: ideologue, pragmatist, and conservative. These persuasions address the future, present, and past as eras of reference and action. Sino-American relations occur in the context of history, globalization, and economics. With strategic engagement to contain the Soviet Union (1972) and subsequent flourishing of trade and investment, the relationship appeared to be beneficial to both sides, and to usher in an era of global cooperation. In recent years, negative aspects of the relationship have emerged as counterweight to the earlier optimism. Results of the November election will be a major factor in US policy – an election closely watched in China.
