Fitz on the GOP Senate primary

The Arizona Daily Star's political cartoonist David Fitzsimmons has a new gig as weekly commentator with a "week in review" comedic look at the past week. This week Fitz has his take on the J.D. Hayworth – John McCain GOP Senate primary. On flags, streetcars, the rodeo and other Old Pueblo excitement Fitz's Tucson:

• Former U.S. Rep. J.D. Hayworth announced he's running against U.S. Sen. John McCain in the Republican primary. The former Human Wind Turbine hopes to unseat the senator by charming Tea Partiers, Birchers and NRA members with "my Foghorn Leghorn impressions, my flag-waving proficiency and my fully loaded semiautomatic mouth."

Snapping nonexistent suspenders, Hayworth informs us he was the voice of Foghorn in three Warner Brothers classic cartoons. Portraying the bilious rooster required, in Hayworth's words, "I say, son, I say just me bein' mah self, ya hear me boy?"

• Meanwhile, McCain enjoys being unpredictable. When Republicans were in the majority, he sometimes bucked the GOP leadership by thinking. But now that Democrats control the White House and Congress, his instinct is not to think. The man's a maverick.
