Rep. Harold E. Ford Jr., the new chairman of the Democratic Leadership
Council (DLC), yesterday said he does not agree with efforts by
Congress to set a deadline for U.S. military withdrawal from Iraq."I think most Americans want to win, they don’t want to see us leave
early, and if we leave prematurely, we may create a broader set of
conflicts and invite a bigger problem in that region than before
leaving," Mr. Ford said.
Actually, Mr. Ford, most Americans, and certainly most Democrats understand there is no longer a military solution in Iraq, and continuing a failed policy of military occupation is only prolonging the pain and getting our troops killed needlessly.
Why is it again that Democrats tolerate the DLC? What benefit do they confer on our party that we put up with DLC members like Ford, From, and Lieberman hold our party hostage to their agenda and undermine our party’s stated positions with the American public. When your ‘allies’ are busy thrusting a dagger into your back at every opportunity, why should we continue to call them allies?
Arizona’s Governor and our other elected Democrats who are members of the DLC need to address the question of whether they agree with Mr. Ford, or if they repudiate his head-in-in-sand approach to the problem of the Iraq occupation.

I agree with what you said about dialogue and negotiate Francine. It just seems that today’s Republicans get more “joy jolts” and votes by labelling people enemies and by refusing to talk to them. This makes them look tough and looking tough appears to be what gets them votes.
What drives me crazy is that they like to look tough and then send the same troops in, again and again and again and again. They lower the standards of the military to try to get more recruits and they know deep in their hearts that the only thing that will win their war is a draft.
They are total cowards and don’t even believe in the cause they are fighting for. They are now digging in on Iraq out of desperation…to save themselves and to keep themselves in power.
Nancy Pelosi wears the head scarf out of respect for their cultural norms and to make herself more easily accepted in a society where her role in our society is quite foreign to most people there. Showing respect for people’s culture when you are talking to them about important things like not killing each other is just plain smart. It is easier for them to deal with a woman in her position if she is not “in your face” by not covering her head. Myself, I have respect for her respect of the sensibilities of other people.
At the risk of inflaming Dwight: I also like the idea of President Pelosi! Imagine having a president who wants to negotiate rather than fight!
I know I do this at my own peril, but come on Mr. Leister, few hear disagree with the treatment by women in some Islamic circles (as with the treatment of women in some Christian, Jewish, and other religious circles).
But is that at reason to go to war and are we really going to change them with bullets and a puppet government.
Voting is just one teeeny tiny element of democracy, but culture is the most important of all. YOu can’t change political culture with bullets and bombs. All you do is oppress people, make them afraid (as in Hussein) or empower people who may just vote what their political culture is.
If we hadn’t emboldened the Sunnis (who we are fighting by the way) and demand their inclusion in this new government, what democracy would have brought us is the very same government that you are discussing in your posts.
Conservative or fundamentalist Shias, with the majority power, will elect, guess what? Fundamentalist Shias. That is also what happened in Palestine when they elected Hezbolah.
Voting is just one little ingredient of democracy.

Hi! I read Frank’s comments and, needless to say, what he sees is entirely different from what I see . It seems to me that Kral and Michael are doing a very good job of answering Frank. I’m glad to leave it in your capable hands.
You should see what Frank Antenori says about all this and the poll Francine cites on the Arizona 8th blog.
I worry a lot about this one now. I understand the concern of winning and who takes or retains power…especially when it is so serious as an average of 2 American soliers deaths a day and countless countless innocent souls in Iraq.
Those who are against the war have most Americans behind them. If Francine’s cited poll is right, most want Congress to cut off funds. They need to right now, this instant, fight the Republican sloganeering and not each other.
The slogans now are that “cutting off funds” is not supporting the troops. The “support the troops” issue is what many in Congress now fear as an ad against them later. They also fear the “voted for defeat” slogan.
Both are what are hamstringing this congress. Both have to be addressed and argued against or there will be very little that will happen and Republicans will win the day, with simply slogans.

the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) is a bunch of elitist, self-appointed “experts” on what the Democratic party must to do. They do not represent me. They found Tammy Duckworth to knock out Christine Cegelis in Illinois and spent, if memory serves me, $3 million on that race – and lost. Why did they lose? Would Cegelis have lost? I don’t know but what I do know is that Cegelis gave Henry Hyde a terrific run for his money and after he stepped down, she was (in my opinion) well positioned to win that seat. Now, I don’t know about anyone else, but I am damned sick and tired of a small group of elitists – albeit Democratic elitists – deciding what is right for the Democratic party and trying to shove it down everyone else’s throat. They tried to “dis” Howard Dean after the 2006 win – that should be the new definition of chutzpah – after Dean’s 50 state strategy resulted in our retaking the Congress. No Democratic candidate up for re-election lost. Doesn’t anyone look at the data???
We should pay attention to our warts – of which the DLC is the largest – rather than worry about the warts of the Republicans. Harold Ford, you’re a Democrat, too – that’s all – just too – and your opinion is one among many and the many should run this party – not the few.

How does it feel to have your pets dying because of tainted wheat from china, your family being poisoned by Produce from Mexico tainted with samonilla, companies moving to Dubia to avoid paying taxes that supports the American Infastructure so Illegal Mexican Nationals have streets to protest in, all of this and more is due to American know how that used chemicals to prevent diseases that are now everywhere killing hundreds of thousands of Americans every year, from samonillia food poisoning to typhoid that is being brought over the Border by unmonitored people from Mexico and South America and China.
The destruction of America is happening right before your eyes and is only one epidemic away from affecting you and me as illegalls overpower our healthcare system and demand FREE operations and medicine.
Let me tell you a story about my sister who lives near St. Mary’s Hospital in an apartment complex. She pays around $600.00 dollars a month for her one bedroom apartment. Her neighbor needed a ride to work one day and they began talking about thr Rent, her neighbor told her in front of me and my Father that she “IS A MEXICAN, AND ONLY HAS TO PAY $100.00 DOLLARS A MONTH FOR HER RENT.” I never heard of RACE being a factor in the amount of rent being paid. My Sister who has a Mexican surname said,” Gee maybe I qualify too as a Mexican?”

People who deny the Hollicost ever existed and are declaring that when the get nuclear weapons they will destroy Isreal and terrorise The United States with local detonations of low yield nuclear devises from coast to coast should NOT be allowed to get nuclear technology in the first place. Billions of dollars for Spinach and Peanuts are more important now as Congress LEFT town with the President left holding the bag, and what is more unsetteling is The president did NOT call them BACK into session to fund anything other than Spinach and Peanuts.

That is what we should be asking when Republicans call those of us against the war cowardly and favoring defeat. We should also ask them why they are not willing to support a draft, which is what it would take to “win” in Iraq, Iran, and Afganistan.

Why are the Democrats in power now so afraid of being labelled cowards and not supporting the troops.
If you look at the Republican and Administration rhetoric on the war, that is all that is left. If we leave there will be defeat…and it will look bad if we are defeated.
Sometimes you just got to suck it up and say you were wrong and sometimes you have to fight for what you believe in.
Ford, I know you want to get elected, get in power. I know you know that Tennessee won’t stand for “cut and run”, but I hope you will think more about what you stand for.
